Because its more difficult to let go of conflicted relationships with family than it would be if these relationships were mere friendships, unresolved conflicts with family members can be particularly painful. We have certain expectations of trust and closeness toward family members, and it can be more than merely disappointing to realize that this may not be possible with all family members. The Stress of Unresolved Family Disputes Unresolved family conflicts bring additional stress at family gatherings in particular. Past unresolved conflicts can become the elephant in the room, felt by everyone, but not directly addressed in the situation. This can be stressful for everyone before and during the family gatherings, sometimes leaving a lasting sense of stress afterward as well. Without a heartfelt discussion, an apology or another form of resolution, the trust on both sides is compromised, and may not know what to expect from this person in the future. (For example, that one time your mother-in-law criticized your cooking may come up in your mind every time she comes for a visit, and others may sense your tension.) This leads many people to assume the worst when they interpret each others behavior in the present and future interactions rather than giving the benefit of the doubt like most of us do with people we trust. Also, references or reminders of past conflicts can sting and create new pain. Once a conflict has gone on a while, even if both parties move on and remain polite, the feelings of pain and mistrust are usually lingering under the surface, and are difficult to resolve: bringing up old hurts in an effort to resolve them can often backfire, as the other party may feel attacked; avoiding the issue altogether but holding onto resentment can poison feelings in the present. What You Can Do to Ease Conflict So what do you do at a family gathering when theres someone there with whom youve had an unresolved conflict? Just be polite. Contrary to how many people feel, a family gathering is not the time to rehash old conflicts, as such conversations often get messy before they get resolved â" if they get resolved. Again, be polite, redirect conversations that get into areas that may cause conflict, and try to avoid the person as much as you politely can. Even if everyone else fails to follow this advice, if you are able to focus on handling your end of the conflict in a peaceful way, you can go a long way in minimizing battles at family gatherings and promoting peace. You may be surprised by how much of a difference this can make in the overall feel of your family get-togethers, and in your personal feelings and stress level leading up to them. In future dealings with this person, you can take one of three paths: Try to resolve the conflict. At a time when all the family isnt gathered, ask the person if theyd like to discuss and resolve what happened in the past. If (and only if) you and the other person seem to want to resolve things and are open to seeing one anothers point of view, this could be a constructive idea. Seeing where each of you may have misunderstood the other or behaved in a way you would change if you could, offering sincere apologies, and in other ways resolving the conflict can heal the relationship for the future.Forgive and forget. If it looks like such a civil meeting of the minds is unlikely, dont push it. Its probably a good idea to try to forgive the other person and let it go. Forgiving doesnt mean opening yourself up to feel wronged again; it only means that you let go of your feelings of resentment and anger. You can be careful in what you expect from this person in the future without actively harboring resentment, and youll be the one to benefit the most. Minimi ze contact or cut the person out of your life. If what the other person did was abusive and theres absolutely no remorse or reason to expect things to be different in the future, you can severely limit your dealings with this person, or cut off contact altogether. This is normally a last-resort choice, but in cases of abuse, its sometimes a necessary one to make for your own emotional health. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-86961334508768280832020-05-23T11:45:00.001-07:002020-05-23T11:45:03.889-07:00This Terrible PhenomenonThis Terrible Phenomenon On September 11, 2001 people around the world witnessed one of the most tragic events during the last decades. This tragedy took place in the USA, the country of wealth, prosperity and well-being. That morning everyone in this world realized that nobody could be insured against such a horrible phenomenon like terrorism. Although things have changed since that ill-starred day and billions of dollars have gone to the defense funds, everyone is still threatened with danger of terrorism. Even those people who live far away from the United States of America do not feel save and private anymore. The words like Al-Queda and Anthrax have become an integral part of the vocabulary of every person. Now they may be the part of everyday conversation between two friends who met each other in the shop or two colleagues in the office. The problem lies in the fact that terrorism doesnââ¬â¢t happen in America only. It appears to be seen in different parts of the world, in different countries, cities etc. There are many reasons why people resort to terrorism. Sometimes the reason of terrorism is hidden in the fact that terrorists are not satisfied with the present governmentââ¬â¢s political actions and they decide to end it up with their own hands. The other reason of the terroristsââ¬â¢ acts is the hate. This hate is directed towards the nationality, race or religion of the other country. In recent years the terrorism acts seem to become more violent and cruel than it was in the past. Probably, nothing else is left for us except to pray that someday people will come to their senses and realize how precious the life of every human being is. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-26615434108432098012020-05-12T06:39:00.001-07:002020-05-12T06:39:03.859-07:00Underage Drinking Essays - 1216 Words ââ¬Å"Automobiles are not ferocious.... it is man who is to be feared,â⬠as Robbins B. Stoeckel remarked, enumerates a simple, yet fundamental concept- a vehicle in itself is a relatively safe, that is, until you put a person behind the controls. Further adding to the danger is the ever prevalent risk of a fellow driver being impaired by the usage of alcohol; perhaps the only thing that may make such a situation even more difficult and dangerous is one who is under the legal alcohol drinking age. The remaining thousand are usually caused by such grisly circumstances as falling, burning, and drowning. While this may seem a relatively small number in the vast amounts of the twelve to twenty year old age group, estimates are that within the past month one-quarter of underage persons used alcohol, while two-thirds of those were binge drinkers. In September 2011 there will be a vote on a bill that will double the prison sentence of anyone committing armed robbery, in the state of Wisconsin. The hope of the bill sponsors is that the increased penalties will deter a person from committing armed robbery. Senator McKenzie is aware of popular support for the bill; however, he has asked for my recommendation of whether or not the measure will have any genuine deterrent effect on the rate of incidence. We will write a custom essay sample on Prison Term Policy Recommendation Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now When State Senator McKenzie asked me for my recommendation, I looked for studies on the deterrent effect of lengthy sentences, for armed robbery. The studies I read indicate that, whereas there may be a slight decrease in recidivism, the reduction was not significant enough to indicate that a longer sentence has a significant deterrent effect on those commit armed robbery. The reduction of crime is not directly contributable to the length of sentence. Rather than focus, too intently, on studies of the deterrent effect of stiffer penalties, I believe that it is more important to look at the other factors, which may lead a person to commit an armed robbery. There are three criminology theories in particular, which may influence a criminalââ¬â¢s decision to commit a violent crime. The biological theory theorizes that some people are ââ¬Ëborn to be badââ¬â¢; something in his or her biological makeup causes them to behave in a violent fashion. The rational choice theory theorizes that people have free will and, if they commit a violent act it is that they choose to do so. Finally, the psychological theory theorizes that there is a psychological deficiency that leads a person to commit criminal acts. What is Armed Robbery? To begin, it is important to understand why armed robbery should receive greater penalties than non-armed robbery. When a person commits armed robbery, he or she is using, or threatening to use, a weapon; the criminal is intimidating the victim into relinquishing his or her money or property (CriminalDefenseLawyer. com, 2011). When weapons are involved, the danger that someone will be seriously harmed or killed significantly increases. The purpose of the bill, on focusing on armed robbery, is to deter criminals from using violence in the commission of his or her crime. The main question to be considered is; why does a criminal commit an armed robbery? Understanding this question may eventually lead to the genuine determination of how to reduce and eliminate crime; three theories of criminal behavior in particular may hold the key. Biological Theories The first theory to consider is the biological theory. Is there something in the fundamental makeup of an individual that may lead him or her to violence and criminal activities? Cesare Lombraso, a 19th century Italian medical doctor, is one of the best known scientific biological theorists. One of his theories posited that, if a person had an underdeveloped brain (e. g. inferior brain) they would be incapable of conforming to the rules and laws of society; because they would be unable to understand why what they are doing is wrong. Lombroso performed autopsies on numerous criminals, including an Italian soldier who attacked and killed eight of his fellow soldiers, and found deformities of the criminalsââ¬â¢ brains. This led him to conclude that a reason for the criminalââ¬â¢s behavior was that the criminal had inferior reasoning capabilities, and therefore, the criminal could not understand the difference between what is right and wrong (Schmalleger, 2009). A biological theory, by evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, theorized that because life favors the strongest and best individuals, those who are able to attain power and possessions are most likely to procreate, thus continuing his or her genes. Animals, including humans, are driven to ggression, and crime, to improve his or her economic and social positions; to facilitate his or her search for a mate (Schmalleger, 2009). Lombraso and Darwin determined that biology is the cause behind aggressive and criminal behavior. Rational Choice Theory A second theory is the classical school of criminology referred to as the rational choice theory, or free will. This theory posits that a person chooses to commit criminal acts; that circumstances su ch as social and economic hardships lead a person to commit crime. The theory maintains that a person will consider the pros and cons of committing a criminal act; if the benefits outweigh the punishment, the person will commit the crime (Law Library: Free Legal Encyclopedia, 2011). According to this theory, a person with low social standing, and often impoverished would be more likely to commit armed robbery to improve his or her economic conditions, thus improving his or her social position. Classical theorists Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham were two theorists who believed that if the punishment were greater than the benefits of the crime, individuals would be deterred from committing criminal (Schmalleger, 2009). However, this theory does not appear to take into account the desperation factor; if someone is impoverished, possible living on the streets, his or her desperation for basic requirements may be such that there is no deterrent strong enough to stop him or her. Psychological Theory The third theory is based on psychological factors. Sigmund Freud and J. Dollard proposed theories that, when a person is significantly frustrated, over a long period, aggression is the natural outcome (Schmalleger, 2009). According to this belief, if a person lives in depravation long enough, the individual will eventually become frustrated enough that he or she may resort to armed robbery, to improve his or her economic status. Another psychological theory, which is popular in current times, is that violent video games, television, and movies, are the driving force behind violent criminal activity. Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, a former assistant professor of psychology at West Point, calls video game, ââ¬Å"hypnotic murder simulatorsâ⬠(Schmalleger, 2009, p. 231). This theory posits that people become desensitized to violence and lose perspective; they no longer see right and wrong, therefore they may resort to criminal activity to obtain what they want. You read "Prison Term Policy Recommendation Paper" in category "Papers" Whether any, or all, of these theories have merit, it is clear that there are factors other than simple greed that can lead to a person committing a violent crime such as armed robbery. Without being able to narrow down the factors of why a person is likely to commit an armed robbery, it is difficult at best to determine what will deter him or her from committing the crime. It is my belief that too many factors contribute to a personââ¬â¢s decision to commit the crime, to believe that simply lengthening the sentence will be effective. Studies Two studies in particular, on the deterrent effect of longer sentences on criminals committing armed robbery, indicate that although there may be a slight deterrent effect, there is not a significant deterrent effect by increasing sentence length. In 2006, Italy passed a bill that gave clemency to thousands of criminals with three or fewer years left on his or her sentences. If the criminals were to commit any further crimes within the next five years, not only would the individual have to serve the sentence for whatever crime was committed, the sentence would be extended by whatever time had not been previously served (University of Chicago Press Journals, 2009). This gave three scientists, Francesco Drego, Roberto Galbiati, and Pietro Vertova the opportunity to study the deterrent effect of longer sentences on recidivism rates. In 2009, the scientists published their discoveries in the Journal of Political Economy; the results indicate that an increase of sentencing, by as little as one month, reduced the recidivism rate by 1. 3% in less serious crimes; however, for criminals committing more serious offenses, of which armed robbery is one, there was virtually no deterrent effect (University of Chicago Press Journals, 2009). Although this study is encouraging for less serious crimes, it does not indicate that there is a significant reduction of serious and/or violent crimes because of the longer sentencing. Another study conducted by the economists David S. Lee of Columbia and Justin McCrary of Michigan, focused on Florida recidivism rates, discovered that even though imprisonment and sentences increase from three to 17% after the age of 18, depending on the seriousness of the crime, there was no significant drop in recidivism rates when juvenile criminals transitioned to adult courts. It was, in fact, because the individual was incarcerated and unable to commit more crimes that there was a drop in criminal activity between the ages of 17 and 19 (Waldfogel, 2007). Conclusion There are too many factors, which may cause a person to commit an armed robbery, to believe that simply lengthening the prison term will be effective. If a person is biologically inclined toward criminal activity, longer sentences will not be sufficient to override his or her biological ââ¬Ëprogrammingââ¬â¢. If they have inferior cognitive abilities, because of underdeveloped brains, they will be unable to comprehend the significance of a longer sentence; a longer sentence would have no more significance to them than a shorter sentence. If the person has endured frustration long enough that they feel his or her only choice it to take what they want by force, they are unlikely to consider the prison sentence before they commit the act. Or they may determine that even if they are caught, at least they will have a roof over their heads, food on their plate, and clothes on their back, if they are sent to prison. For some criminals this may, in fact, be an inducement to commit the crime. If a person has become psychologically ââ¬Ëwarpedââ¬â¢ by social media, they may have lost the capability to judge right and wrong, thereby losing the capability to consider the consequences of his or her actions; a longer sentence would not be sufficient deterrence. Finally, if the person has made the choice, of his or her own free will, to commit an armed robbery, even after weighing the pros and cons, doubling his or her sentence is going to have very little deterrent effect. Many criminals believe that they will not be apprehended; or they believe they will be able to reduce their sentence through a plea bargain. When a criminal chooses to commit a crime, they are also choosing to accept the penalty should they be caught. Of the three theories, I believe that a criminal who falls under the rational choice theory has the best chance of being deterred. This criminal is the one who is most likely to understand the significance of a longer sentence. However, as the Italian and Florida studies indicated, imposing longer sentences did little to deter violent criminals. As violent crime is not, in my opinion, a rational act, it is unlikely that armed robbers would fall under the rational choice theory; hence, they are unlikely to be deterred by doubling their prison sentence. My Recommendation While I do not believe that doubling the prison sentences of armed robbers will have a significant deterrent effect on armed robbers, I do believe that it will have an effect on the crime rate. If the criminal is incarcerated for a long period, they are unable to commit further armed robberies. They will be segregated from society, and will be unable to further victimize society. Society will also receive psychological benefits from the new law; they will feel comforted by the fact that the individual is no longer able to victimize society. As the bill has popular support, from both the legislature and the public, I recommend that Senator McKenzie vote to pass the bill, when it comes up for a vote in September 2011. Answer: Leadership can be referred to a state, which someone possesses with the help of various necessary elements in it that are known as traits, motives and effectiveness of leaders (Northouse, 2015). There is a strong bonding in between the leadership traits, motives and effectiveness. A leader can have varied different traits, which depends hugely on its personal behaviour and the situational circumstances surrounding to him or her (Germain, 2012). Many traits are given there to identify the degree of level to become an effective leader. However, it depends hugely in the personal capabilities of the individual and on its capabilities to tackle the surrounding situation. Some leaders are born; however, they may have different characteristics altogether. Despite of the differences they have, they inspire their zone because the situational circumstances shape them accordingly (Wasylyshyn, Shorey Chaffin, 2012). Leaders can have varied characteristics of influence such as dominance, self-as surance, passion, tough-mindedness etc. This is also very interesting that different kinds of leadership yield different results, which gets evident in the organizational output and the employees behaviour (Sam et al., 2012). For example, leaders who have enthusiasm, they are very keen to adapt the different changes if they are asked to do so. They are very adjustable in nature, which makes them highly suitable for the workplace as they believe in assimilating with the workforces. On the other hand, tough-minded leaders are very practical and less attached to sentiments. They are loosely attached to the varied emotions of employees. Such leaders are worthy for the organization but not for the employees. Some employees find such leaders very professional and less expressive, which also prevents them from making strong connectivity with such leaders. In such circumstances, employees work just for the sake of its needs; however, they find it difficult to attach themselves with such emp loyees (Wasylyshyn, Shorey Chaffin, 2012). The main purpose of this assignment is to make its readers understand that different traits of leaders have strong connectivity with their different motives and effective characteristics. However, the assignment would make its reader understand that not all the traits are productive in nature as far as operation is concerned. Moreover, this assignment would also make its readers understand the different possibilities, which a particular trait can cause on the respective surroundings. Theory of traits states that leaders have different sets of trait, which is born in them or are produced in the influence of various surrounding circumstances. Leadership is a topic that has many theoretical facts behind it, which tries to provide it a layer, so that, it could become understandable to the readers. The leadership theory has been categorised in many different traits, which according to the leadership theory are ideal characteristics that a leader possess or can have to influence a group (Amanchukwu, Stanley Ololube, 2015). It means that different traits of leadership such as enthusiasm, self-assurance, tough-minded etc. have their good impact on its followers. However, this is not always true because at times leaders can be strict, which are bearable to many but some might find this a strange behaviour. For example, encouraging employees to work extra over the normal shift time might be a good resource for earning, as this would provide them over time allowances. Howe ver, on the other hand, some might not take this as an equally good option. To such employees, work life balance matters a lot. For example, Australians have high flair to work life balance than the Japanese (Chhokar, Brodbeck House, 2013). Differences can also be found at the same workplace. Traits and motives are two different terms with different characteristics as well but they collectively give birth to effectiveness, which the leader has on its followers. Motives can be termed as different behavioural states, which influence its followers differently at different circumstances (Chemers, 2014). For example, employees those have behavioural issues, it is then required from leaders that they use strong ethical attitude to rectify the faulty behaviours. Traits are those factors that influence the leaders for a particular motive when it is required. A leader takes different motives, which is best feasible to the surrounding circumstances only when it has the capability to excel into the requirement. For example, a leader can have passion to inspire the behaviour of employees but it might or might not inspire the same. This is because employees might have some issues, which is not repairable through any theoretical approach. It rather requires some practically added to it . For example, if an employee has issues with the work nature of his or her respective workplace, leaders can never be able to motivate such employees by just using some motivating theories. Leaders in such circumstances would rather need to understand the exact problem and then work accordingly (Daft, 2014). If the concerned employee has issues with the work pressure, it is advisable to make him understand the requirement. If the concerned employee persists with the same feeling then it is better that respective leader use the most feasible approach to resolve the issue. Leaders should first check the truthiness of the escalated issue and then accordingly act to reduce the work pressure. This can either be done by aligning additional manpower or by extending the work deadline. Leaders can go both the ways depending on the feasibility of the options with the surrounding circumstances in the concerned organization. It is indeed undeniable that leaders who have strong passion to success and does not know any obstacle as big as it appears, they tend to inspire and influence mass followers. For example, Mark Zuckerberg who is the founder and CEO of Facebook has had never thought that his innovation would bring him such as success. Mark Zuckerberg who is just above the age of 30 has become one of the most powerful billionaire in this universe (Kirkpatrick, 2012). It is evident that leadership skills play a high role in conquering the success; however, it is also undeniable that very few leaders have been successful in producing the same effect. It is indeed very important for leaders to become practical and use the leadership characteristic according to the situation. They need to mix it up with some practical yet feasible decisions to influence its followers. Leadership skills and motives then require a right execution of it in order to become an effective leader and influence the behaviour of its followers. It is also evident in the mentioned example that a proper execution of a correct set of leadership characteristics is indeed more important for yielding the success. Colonel Harland Sanders present strong supporting evidence in this regard. The man who started at the age of 65 did conquer the success after facing the failure at approximately 1009 times (Ozersky, 2012). This clearly proves that leadership qualities are born but it takes time to yield the deserving success, which is only possible if it is executed at the most appropriate time. Traits, motives and effectiveness are all a part of leaders, which are potential characters and can produce potential results as well provided if it is executed appropriately according to the circumstances. Leadership characteristics are born in leaders but they need to realise the right time to execute the most appropriate leadership characteristic, which could yield the desire success. Leadership qualities are born; however, it takes time to realize the inbuilt qualities. Colonel Harland Sanders took 65 years of his age to realise that he has leadership quality in him. He realised the potential of a leader in him after facing failure on approximately 1009 times. He eventually travelled a long journey with no success and then finally realised that he can make a difference. Colonel Harland Sanders then took a bold step to come up with chicken recipe and the rest is history. Colonel Harland Sanders is one of the most powerful billionaires on this earth and KFC is one of the most powe rful fast food brands in the world. A proper execution of leadership qualities is also evident in the example of Mark Zuckerberg who is just above the age of 30; however, he is one of the most powerful billionaires in this world. Nobody has had ever thought that a social platform would be such a success; however, Mark Zuckerberg realised the urgency at the most appropriate time and the rest is history. Facebook is the highest engaged platform across all the social platforms that are available. These two examples clearly state that theoretical concept on leadership traits; motives and effectiveness are truthful to an extent when there is no such urgency. However, it is not as effective in situations when it needs to analyse the most productive leadership traits. It simply depends on the decisions, which leaders take according to the situational needs. Such decisions might not look like a leadership trait or motive; however, the future would define the usefulness of such decisions. Tr ue leadership examples are very few; however, those few examples have set benchmark for other to follow. References Amanchukwu, R. N., Stanley, G. J., Ololube, N. P. (2015). (Fulbrook 1990 p176-202) During this time of the Nazi regime, Hitler, along with his minister of propaganda, Dr Joseph Goebbels, took control of all media output, giving them one voice towards the population of Germany. (Fulbrook 1990 p182) Having control of all the media output, such as literature, art, music, radio, films, and newspapers, gave the Nazis one of their greatest weapons during their time in power an unopposed propaganda machine. (Snyder 1995 p273) Propaganda is seen as the art of persuasion, it is the ability to persuade others that your side of the story is correct. It might take the form of persuading others that your military might is too great to be challenged or that your political might within a nation is too great or popular to challenge. (Rutherford 1985 p8) The Nazis however, were more concerned with using propaganda to build the myth of Hitler, the image of him being the saviour of Germany and the myth of the Aryan German. This myth being that the pure German was the superior race through nobility of blood. (Snyder 1995 p277) To evaluate the impact of propaganda within the Nazi regime, this essay will focus on the importance, or the worth of the impact to which the propaganda had through these myths. It will focus firstly on the Hitler myth, and how Hitlers image made an impact on the German population with the use of propaganda. It will look at the radio, the impact broadcasted propaganda had when portraying this myth. It will then look at the Aryan myth, and how the youth of Germany were fed propaganda from the outset of their lives, allowing them to know nothing else but this myth. (Snyder 1995 p278) And the impact this propaganda had upon the Jewish population of Nazi Germany. He claims, with certainty that support for the Nazi party never approached the same levels as it did for Hitler, suggesting that the support, praise or belief for Hitler went way beyond those who thought of themselves as Nazis. He claims that Hitler embraced many who were critical of the institutions, policies, and ideology of the regime. It could be said that the impact of the Hitler myth was massive, along with the propaganda that portrayed it. The worth of the image of the Fuhrer would be priceless in providing the regime with its mass base of support. (Kershaw 1987) Hitler himself paid the greatest attention to the building of his public image. He gave great care to style and posture during speeches and other public engagements. He was keen to avoid any hint of human failings, as in his refusal to be seen wearing spe ctacles or participate in any form of sport or other activity in which he might not excel and which might make him an object of amusement rather than admiration. Even his celibacy was portrayed by Goebbels as a sacrifice of personal happiness for the welfare of the nation. (Bessel 1987 p41-45) Hitler worked wonders for his own image as the fuhrer, but it could be argued that a more dynamic impact was to come from radio broadcasts. (Snyder 1995 p279) Dr Goebbels considered the radio to be his number one weapon in transmitting propaganda. In 1933 Goebbels appointed Eugen Hadamowsky as head of the chamber of radio, and on the 16th August of the same year, Hadamowsky issued a report on what had been accomplished in a little more than a month. (Snyder 1995 p279) The report read, We National Socialists must show enough dynamism and enthusiasm coupled with lightening speed to impress Germany and the whole world. Party comrade Dr Goebbels ordered me on July 13th 1933, to purge the German radio of influence opposed to our cause. I can now report that the work has been done thoroughly. Throughout the day and evening the German public would hear broadcasts portraying the fuehrer as the nations most precious asset and would describe the Nazi way of life as desirable. It could be argued that the propaganda used by the Nazis was so constant and unopposed, that it effectively brainwashed a nation into believing what the Nazis wanted them to be lieve. (Snyder 1995 p279) It had the biggest part of a nation believing that Hitler, the Fuhrer, was a godlike figure. He was seen in this way by most of the people beneath him. Everyone owed allegiance to him and he always got his way. The phrase The Fuhrer knows best became a common saying throughout Germany. This ingenious Nazi propaganda had turned the mild Adolf Hitler into the fuhrer of Germany, who was now seen by the people of Germany, as the saviour of Germany. (Kershaw 1987) As well as being an ingenious form of propaganda, it could be argued that the Hitler Myth increased Hitlers confidence too much, and made him too powerful, forcing him into decisions which he may not have other wise made with a little more opposition or a little less popularity. It could be said that Hitler started out with a plan of action, It has been said that he wrote this plan in his book Mein Kampf, (Watt 1974) yet it would be difficult to believe that even Hitler himself would have believed that his ideas would actually become reality. Hitlers huge platform of popularity made his own power position ever more invincible; it provided the basis for the extreme ways in the Third Reich. It allowed for Hitlers personal ideas and obsessions to become translated into a reachable reality. It could be suggested that the mass adulation actually caused Hitler to believe he was indeed superhuman, and that he would lead a pure German Aryan race. (Watt 1974 p258) The Aryan myth and Nazi ideology was injected into society from an early age. Every German child would say Heil Hitler throughout the day, everyday, every time they would greet someone in the street, or at school, or when they would greet their parents. (Ayer, 1995, p144) This greeting, accompanied by the raising of the right arm, high up in to the air as a salute to the fuhrer of Germany could be said to have had a great impact on every child, and possibly most adults. (Wiesenthal, 1997) It could easily be said that the children of Germany, were seen as a major propaganda weapon of the Nazis them-selves. Guided by the Nazis, they would install their rules and beliefs from the outset of a childs life. (Wiesenthal, 1997) When a child would leave the house to head off for school, with the words Heil Hitler upon his or her lips, he or she would possibly walk down a street covered with the swastika flag, the Nazi emblem, hanging from almost every window of every other house in the street . (Ayer, 1995 p144) Once at school the German child would soak up the propaganda that was forced upon them. All aspects of Nazi ideology, and in particularly the preaching of anti-Semitism, that being the hatred towards the Jews, and the need for a pure German population, the need for an Aryan population would be the everyday routine. (Gutman, 1995) It could be argued that there was no other condition wherever Nazis were in power; and in Germany at that time, they did rule everywhere. Their supremacy over the German child, as they learnt, ate, slept, and grew up, would be almost complete. (Wiesenthal, 1997) The children of Germany would grow into Nazi teenagers; join such groups as the Jungvolk, the junior division of the Hitler youth or the jungmadel for the young girls of Germany, where they would endure more preaching of the Nazi ways. (Wiesenthal, 1997) In these youth organisations, the young Aryan teenagers would be fed with more Nazi propaganda, in the form of enjoyment; they would bond together, wear the brown shirt uniform of the Hitler youth and preach the might of the fuhrer to younger children. These organisations had something for everyone, but were open to only the pure German children. (Snyder 1995 p187) Once the teenagers had reached the age of fourteen, the young women would then join the bund deutscher madel, which was better known as the league of German girls where the young women would be prepared for marriage and motherhood. (Snyder 1995 p45-46) The young boys however would join the Hitler Jugend, more commonly referred to as the Hitler youth, all the way to the age of twenty-one. Here the young men would be gradually drawn away from their families, with a routine covering the entire week. Every free hour was monopolized, and the parents dared not object to this kind of conformity. The failure of any boy to join the Hitler youth was regarded as a violation of civic responsibility. (Snyder 1995 p161-162) These youngsters, who lived more and more with their comrades, and with the impact of the Nazi propaganda, would gradually turn into young German adults, thinking and breathing only in the ways of an Aryan Nazi. But not everyone in Germany fitted this picture of perfection of the Aryan, and not all children had the preaching of Nazi ways. (Snyder 1995 p277-278) Due to the mass propaganda surrounding the superior race or Aryan myth, the Nazis saw to it that a euthanasia policy was to come into effect to deal with the unsuitable children of Germany. Any child with a disease, such as idiocy or mongolism, or any deformity, in particular the absence of limbs, or spina bifida would come under this policy and would be subjected to death. (Rees 1997 p81) The youth were also picked out due to the Aryan myth. If they had a bad family background, and the Nazis classed them as delinquent, then they would be forcibly sterilized as teenagers. This sterilization of teenagers and the euthanasia policy would effectively, in the eyes on the Nazis, cleanse the future German Aryan race. (Rees 1997 p83) The Jewish population also fell foul to the Aryan myth. The Nazis saw the Jewish population as a pollutant, or bacteria, which was poisoning and infecting the healthy Aryan stock. (Snyder 1995 p201) In 1941 after Germany had invaded the Soviet Union, (Snyder 199 5 p84) Hitler and the Nazis saw the Jews in the way of victory, and came up with a final solution for ridding Europe of the Jews. It could be said that this final solution was to see the process of the Jews move from exclusion to persecution, then to expulsion, and ultimately to annihilation through the Holocaust. (Snyder 1995 p84) The Holocaust was used to describe Hitlers attempt to exterminate all European Jews, and the Nazis succeeded in physical destroying approximately six million Jews in Europe during their time in power. (Snyder 1995 p168-169) It is in no doubt that the so-called propaganda stunts of the Hitler myth and the Aryan myth caused a massive impact in the Nazi regime. Propaganda set the direction of young peoples lives within the regime and was one of the major causes of millions of deaths. It could easily be said that because the Hitler myth and the Aryan myth had such a big impact on the people of Germany, it actually led to an over positive impact on Hitler himself, or even a negative impact. It could be argued that his over confidence, because of propaganda actually led to Hitlers eventual downfall due to his own belief that he was superhuman and invincible. It could be argued that he made decisions because of his stature, a stature that was glorified over and over again through propaganda and with no opposition. Hitler could effectively do whatever he wanted to do, therefore he did do too much, and he eventually did the unthinkable in the Holocaust. The burning question would be that if the propaganda did no t make such a big impact on Hitler himself, would he have taken such unbelievable actions has he did? meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-44182409865401665012020-03-05T16:12:00.001-08:002020-03-05T16:12:03.453-08:00What Is the PSAT Test Everything You Need to KnowWhat Is the PSAT Test Everything You Need to Know SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Most students know what the SAT is,but what is the PSAT? Sure, it's got"SAT" in its name, but is the PSAT actually connected to the SAT? More importantly, how does the PSAT test work and what is its purpose? In this article,weââ¬â¢ll answer your most pressingquestion: what is thePSAT test? We'll start by explaining the meaning of PSAT and whystudents typically elect to take it. We'll then go over the logistics of the test and how PSAT scoring works. Finally, we'll finish with a brief discussion about how important PSAT scores actually are for students. What Is the PSAT? How Is It Connected to the SAT? To start, what is the PSAT test? Cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)- often shortened to PSAT- is a standardized testtargeting 10th and 11th graders in the US. Every year, approximately3.5 million students take the PSAT test at various high schools. But why take it at all? As it stands, the PSAT is heavily connected to the SAT.One of the test's primary purposes is to act as a precursor to the SAT- as the name suggests, as an SAT practice test. Thus, thePSAT and SAT heavilymirror each other in regard tocontent, structure, and even scoring. But the two tests aren't identical. Here are some majordifferences between the PSAT and SAT: The SAT hasan optional Essay section, whereas the PSAT does not The PSAT is slightly easier than the SAT There are fewer questions on the PSAT than there are on the SAT Now, let's jump back to the"NMSQT" part of the full PSAT name. In addition to being a preparatory test for the SAT, the PSAT is a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. In other words, PSAT scores determine students' eligibility for National Merit scholarships. Each year the top 1% of 11th-grade PSAT takers becomeSemifinalists. Of these, about 7,500 go on to win scholarship money. Finally, what about the PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9? The main purpose of these two tests is to prepare students for the PSAT/NMSQT and eventually the SAT. Nearly identical to the PSAT/NMSQT, the PSAT 10 is only offered in the spring and is specifically geared toward 10th graders. As a result, the PSAT 10 is slightly easier than the PSAT/NMSQT. Additionally, because only 10th graders can take the PSAT 10, this test cannotqualify you for National Merit. The PSAT 8/9, on the other hand, targets even younger folks- you guessed it: 8th and 9th graders- and is administeredin the fall and spring. Unlike both the PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT, the PSAT 8/9 uses a different scoring scale and is both shorter and easier than the PSAT 10. Why Do Students Take the PSAT? 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT primarily forthe following three reasons: To practice for the SAT:One of the most common reasons students, especially juniors, take the PSAT is to get familiar with the layout and content of the SAT, which is often required for college admission. The PSAT provides students with the opportunity to get a feel for the SAT, and helps them identify potential strengths and weaknesses. To secure a National Merit distinction or scholarship:The other major reason students take the PSAT is to try to win a National Merit scholarship. Each year about 1.6 million juniors enter the National Merit competition viathe PSAT. Of these test takers 16,000 will become Semifinalists, and of these Semifinalists 15,000 will become Finalists. In the end,7,500 entrants will each win a $2,500 scholarship along with the (extremely prestigious) distinction of National Merit Scholar. To prepare for a second attempt at the PSAT (if taking it as a sophomore): The final reason students take the PSAT is to practice for the PSAT as sophomores before taking it again as juniors. Although sophomores arenââ¬â¢t eligible for National Merit, taking the PSAT earlycanincrease your shot at getting a high PSAT score- and a coveted National Merit scholarship- later on. One thing should be noted, though: at some high schools, the PSAT is mandatory for certain grade levels or groups of students. This means that some studentswill take the PSAT simply because they have to. Even if the test is required by your school, your PSAT score will never affect your GPA or your chance of getting into college. Bonus: Aiming for a National Merit Scholarship? Unlike the SAT, you do notget to choose your test center; rather, you register for and take the PSAT test at your own high school (or a nearbyschool, should your school not offer it). If youââ¬â¢re uncertain whether your school will be administering the PSAT, or if you'd like to look for a list of schools in your area that will be administering it, use the College Boardââ¬â¢s school search tool. Sowhen can you take the PSAT? The PSAT is administered every autumn, usually starting in early or mid-October, on three dates: A primary date A Saturday date An alternate date Again, you donot get to choose when you take the test. Instead, your school will decide on which date it will administer the PSAT. By far the vast majority of schools hold the PSATon the primary date. To confirmyour school's PSAT test date, consult your counselor. Here is the anticipated 2019 official PSAT testing schedule: Primary Date Saturday Date Alternate Date Wednesday, October 16, 2019 Saturday, October 19, 2019 Wednesday, October 30, 2019 Source: The College Board How Much Does the PSAT Cost? The PSAT costs $16, butthis price varies depending on the school. Some schools might cover all or part of this fee, making the test free for students, whereas others might require students to pay more so asto compensate for the hiring of test proctors. Your school (or the school at which you're taking the PSAT test) should give youinstructions on how to pay for the testand by when you'll need to submit your payment. Most schools request PSAT payments from students by around September. Note that you will neverneed to pay the College Board directly (thatââ¬â¢s theschoolââ¬â¢s job!). If you canââ¬â¢t afford the test fee, you might be eligible for a PSAT fee waiver. Feewaivers are typically available to low-income 11th graders only. To see whether you qualify for a waiver, consult your counselor. Only schools- not students- can request fee waivers from the College Board. What Does the PSAT Cover? The PSAT, which underwent a redesign in 2015 to accompany the 2016 SAT redesign, is extremely similar to the SAT in bothform and content. There are three sections on the PSAT: Reading, Writing and Language (hereafter "Writing"), and Math. (AsI mentioned, there's no optional Essay section on the PSAT.)Each section appears only once on the PSAT in a predetermined order: (1) Reading, (2) Writing, and (3) Math. Similar to theSAT, the PSAT Math section consists of two subsections: a No Calculator subsection on which you may not use a calculator, and a Calculator subsection on which you may use a (pre-approved) calculator. Most questions on the PSAT are multiple choice. The only exceptions are the Math section's grid-in questions. For these questions, you must come up with and write in your own answers. According to the College Board, 17% of PSAT Math, oreight questions, are grid-ins. Belowis the general breakdown of the PSAT. You can see when eachsection appears on the test, how much time youââ¬â¢ll havefor each section, and how many questions there are.Foran even better idea of whatââ¬â¢ll be on the PSAT, I suggest looking atanofficial PSAT practice test. PSAT Section Order on Test Time Allotted # of Questions Reading 1 60 mins 47 Writing and Language 2 35 mins 44 Math No Calculator 3 25 mins 17 Math Calculator 4 45 mins 31 How Is the PSAT Scored? The total PSAT score range is 320-1520 in 10-point increments. This score consists of your Math score and your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score, both of which are scored on a scale of160-760.(EBRW is a combination of the Reading and Writing sections.) These two section scores are actually your scaled, or equated, scores.Buthow do you getthese scores? On the PSAT, you start off with three raw scores, one each for Reading, Writing, and Math.A raw score is equal tothe number of questions you answered correctly. You do not lose any points for incorrect answers! Your raw scores for each section are then converted into test scores on a scale of 8-38through a special equating process described in our guide to PSAT scoring. It should also be noted here that thesetest scores, when combined and multiplied by 2, give you yourSelection Index score, which the NMSC uses to determine eligibility for the National Merit competition. Your Math test score is multiplied by 20 to give you a scaled Math score out of 760. Similarly, your Reading and Writing scores are combined and multiplied by 10 to give you a single scaled EBRW score (also out of 760). In addition to section scores, youââ¬â¢ll be givensubscores and cross-test scores. These scores are the same as those on the SAT and indicate your mastery of specific skills. Subscores have a score range of1-15,whereas cross-test scores have a score range of8-38. Here is a list of the sevensubscores on the PSAT test: EBRW Command of Evidence Words in Context Expression of Ideas Standard English Conventions Math Heart of Algebra Problem Solving and Data Analysis Passport to Advanced Math And here are the twocross-test scores on the PSAT: Analysis in History/Social Studies Analysis in Science At present, the average PSAT score is 1014 for 11th graders and 934 for 10th graders. A good PSAT score for you, though, will depend on what your PSAT goals are. If youhope to qualify for National Merit, youââ¬â¢ll need a score thatplaces you in the top 1% of test takers foryour state. A good PSAT score could also be any score in the75th percentile or higher, or simply any score similartowhat you'll need on the SAT to get into the colleges you're planning on applying to. But in the end, does your PSAT score really mean anything? Does Your PSAT Score Actually Matter? The truth is that your PSAT score is far less important than your SAT (or ACT) score is. This is mainly because the PSAT isn't used for college admissions. Moreover, your PSAT score has no effect on your GPA, so if you really donââ¬â¢t want to take the test, you don't actually need to (unless itââ¬â¢s mandatory at your school). The only major function of PSAT scores is to win scholarship money and the honor of National Merit Scholar. But unless youââ¬â¢re actively aiming for National Merit status, your PSAT score isn't actually that important. Nevertheless, if youââ¬â¢re hoping to eventually secure a high SAT score, approaching the PSAT with diligence will be critical for your success. Why? You see, PSAT scores directly translate into SAT scores. So a 1400 on the PSAT equals a 1400 on the SAT, a 900 equals a 900, and so on. In short, your PSAT score acts as a predictor of your SAT score. Of course, your PSAT score doesnââ¬â¢t take into account any additional time youââ¬â¢ll spend studying for the SAT, so it's not likely going to be 100% accurate. But whatyour PSAT score does offer is a clear idea as towhere youââ¬â¢re currently scoring and how much of an improvement youââ¬â¢ll need to make in order to hityour SAT goal score. Simply put,you can use yourPSAT score as your baseline SAT score, making it a fairly useful (and thusimportant) score to know. Summary: What Is the PSAT? Is It Important? The PSAT/NMSQT, or PSAT, is a practice test for the SAT that's offered every fall for10th and 11th graders. Italso serves as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which awards $2,500 scholarships annually to high-scoring 11th graders. You must register for thePSAT test at your own school (or a nearby school) and take it on the test date chosenby your school. The testfee is $16, but this cost varies depending on the school. Fee waivers are usuallyavailable to low-income juniors. The overall structure and content of the PSAT is similar to that of the SAT.There are three sections (Reading, Writing, and Math) that combine to give you a score between 320 and 1520. PSAT scores directly correspond toSAT scores, meaning a score on the PSAT will always equalthe same score on the SAT. Ultimately, how important your PSAT score is depends on what you planto do with it.If you want toqualify for National Meritor eventually get a high SAT score, it's critical that you get a good PSAT score. But if not, your PSAT score won't hold much significance for you or anyone else. In any case, your PSAT score will always be far less important than your SAT (or ACT) score will be! Whatââ¬â¢s Next? In general, each of the school teacher(s) have different set of multiple roles which they need to satisfy on a daily basis. Because of their unique function within an educational institution, functionalists may sometimes conclude that the presence of certain school policies and institutions can be dysfunctional for most of the teachers within a given educational institution. As explained by Appelrouth and Edles (2008, p. 386), the occurrence of dysfunctionality is possible because ââ¬Å"they are functional for a more powerful social group or the social system itselfâ⬠. Functionalists strongly suggest that the main function of higher education teachers is to provide better occupational opportunities for the unemployed students in the long-run. Upon analyzing the functionalist theory of education, it is the students who function as the receiver of the transferred knowledge, skills and cultural values from the school teachers. However, this theory is not applicable when it comes to analyzing the relationship between teachers and students in higher education. Conflict Theory Conflict theory view education as something that ââ¬Å"reflects other inequalities within a given societyâ⬠(Andersen & Taylor, 2011, p. 348). Because of the presence of racial, class and gender discrimination, not all students are able to receive equal rights to education. Furthermore, conflict perspective in higher education also suggest that the process of tracking down teachersââ¬â¢ ability to deliver good quality teaching based on the prescribed school curriculum also contributes to the development of... This essay stresses that based on symbolic interaction theory, social interaction between teachers and students within an educational institution is possible and necessary when it comes to individual and group successes. As compared to functionalist theory, symbolic interaction theory view human beings within a given society as something that is ââ¬Å"not an established structure but as individuals who are trying to meet their life conditions and expectationsâ⬠. Based on the core perspectives in contemporary sociological theory, the concept of a structural functionalism is more on the non-rational collective side whereas the orientation of symbolic interaction theory is more on non-rational and individualistic side. Considering the fact that symbolic interaction theory heavily relies on the actions made by the school teachers and students, this particular theory can be more effective and applicable in terms of analyzing how the relationship between the school teachers and stude nts in higher education work. This report makes a conclusion that as compared to functionalist and conflict theories, symbolic interactionism theory is the best applicable theory when it comes to analyzing the relationship between teachers and students in higher education. Unlike the functionalist and conflict theories in sociology, symbolic interactionism theory does not focus on analyzing the structure or functionality or conflicts in a given educational institution but only with regards to how each of the stakeholders who are trying to meet their life conditions and expectations as human beings. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-2914967376582096922020-01-26T14:32:00.001-08:002020-01-26T14:32:07.004-08:00Effects of family arrangements on child developmentEffects of family arrangements on child development Describe cultural variations in family arrangements and critically examine psychological research on the effects of these family arrangements on childrens development. Marriage is the basis of households that are formed; a neolocal household consists of a married couple creating a new home. One main family type arrangement is the nuclear family. Lee (1987) this arrangement consists of three main positions. The members being within the household sets a presence, so the number of members does not make a nuclear family more compelling. In a patrilocal family, the new couple join the house of the husband and form a new home. In a matrilocal family the home is set up in the wifes birth home. Matri and Partilocal families are also extended/joint families; this is where members of different generations also live in the house. The older generations uphold a power role and are highly respected. The joint/ extended families usually consist of three or more generations in one house. However, there are non- residential extended families this arrangement is where they live near to the home and communal activities and eat with the other household. Extended family arrangements has its advantages such as being supportive in hard times, however there are disadvantages such as them becoming interfering in the independence and restrict the other younger members life Goodwin, Adatia et al 1997. Family structures are mostly dependant on social and economic circumstances as well as cultural values. Joint families are more likely to see having a bigger family as an important source of secure labour and importance. This is mostly deemed to be important when the wage labour is not the principal economic form. A hierarchical and authoritarian structure is often developed gradually within a joint family structure; this is in order to operate in a smooth manner, and to stress obedience and respect for authority and family reputation. Stropes-Roe and Cochrane, 1989. Extended family living situations have often been exaggerated; this was noticed by Goode 1963, when he researched family systems. An example of this is from family structures in China, whereby the family structure was under attack as the newer generations saw this structure within the household as a negative issue, as they stated that à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦.the traditional family is being wiped out without being replacedà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦. Levy 1949. In the rural areas of China the extended family arrangement is becoming extinct, as the census revealed that the nuclear family is becoming a more common arrangement, reasons for this change may stem from economical reasons, as high mortality rates have increased in the poorer regions due to financial issues which made it difficult for families to extend their homes to accommodate for more people. However, as this change was occurring in China a new form of living developed, this was known the stem family. Stem families consist of parents, their unmarried children and one married child with a partner and children. This arrangement suited children living with their parents due to the lack of housing made available to new buyers and the newly married couple may take advantage of the free accommodation whilst saving to buy further accommodation and the babysitting facilities whilst both parents attend to work. However, instead of contributing more to the elders within an extended family, the young would now benefit more and taking more than they are returning Tsui 1989. This shows that Chinese families can adapt very well in order to suit the socio-political conditions and the environment within the modern family. Overall this demonstrates the functional value of family which is to provide solidarity and material support in difficult times Yang 1988. Also like China the extended family arrangement is rare and only dominant amongst large landowners as they are able to support their large families. Research carried out from Al-Thakeb 1985 found that the extended family has never been the main family structure amongst families living in Arab cultures. This was found by studying nine different Arab countries. Although Al-Thakeb stated that the extended family has never been the main family form in Arab cultures. Due to the family being an independent wedded family this does not mean that the family bonds are weak. As in Arab countries it has been known that the relationship between family members is strong, due to living in close areas to their brothers and sisters, so this arrangement has its rewards as economic cooperation and emotional support is available for the family members. Within the Iran households, housing is a major problem which results in extended families being reduced in size, whilst intensive migration among the rural population has led to the weakening of larger household groups. In turn has led to the separation of extended families, whereby new couples leave their parents and form their own household separately. Meanwhile in Japan a different concept has been applied within household arrangements. The Japanese family structure is like the American family household arrangement; a nuclear setting. Economical reasons are adapted within families here as well, as the retired parents are more likely to live with their children due to economic reasons. However due to many cultural variations in family arrangements, childrens development in society may differ; although there are some similarities as well. The difference in how parents socialise with their children, affects the childs socialisation on childrens development. There are many different parenting styles that are adopted. Steinberg et al 1989 put forward suggestions of three different parenting styles. The first one being psychological autonomy which is the degree to which parents encourage their children to be independent. The second description is parental involvement this is where parents are actively involved in their childs lives. Lastly, the third style is behavioural control this is measured by the degree of how much the parents try to control their childs behaviour and activities. There are two main types of societies within cultures, one being collectivist: this is where the society is involved with the communitys life. The community encourages obedience to authority. In collectivist societies obligation is highly ritualised. The family arrangements that tend to stem from these societies are extended/ joint families mainly. On the other hand there are individualistic societies whereby children are encouraged to develop their own opinions. The family arrangement that mainly stems from this society is the nuclear family. Research into comparing the different societys views on parental upbringing. Larano 1997 conducted research in Canada. Children from different ethnic minorities a list of individualistic and collectivist activities and a parental monitoring scale. The results found showed that collectivist children perceived their parents as being more controlling and less involved with them than individualistic children. This research suggests that the childre n may have come to these conclusions as they live a particular life, for example if a child lived the collectivist extended family life, then it could be argued that the child may perceive the other way of doing things as the better way as it differs from the norm they have to abide by. In China there is continuing evidence for strong parental nurturance and support even when the child has grown up, although the Chinese parenting style is largely authoritarian and involves high levels of regulation from parents in order to ensure proper behaviour. This doesnt mean that children fail to develop autonomy, but may mean that they do so at a later age than children in the more individualistic cultures was found by Schneider et al 1997. One comparison that has been made into the difference between how a child is brought up in cultural difference within families is between Japanese and Israeli families. In Japan children are strongly bonded to their families, with the Japanese mother keen to harmonise her needs with those of her child, which shows the family arrangement between mother and child to be an important one, with the child growing up with a close bond with its mother. Japanese children are constantly in contact with their mothers and are rarely left alone Tobin 1992. Babies are often carried around on their mothers backs and there is a constant non-verbal interaction between parent and child. In comparison the Israeli mothers put forward a more independent upbringing style, and favour the idea of children being independent and self sufficient. As a result of this the Israeli mother may encourage the child ability to be alone as an example of their childs emotional independence, while the Japanese mother may value the child development of social relationships. In Britain different ethnic groups have different attitudes towards the socialisation of their children and their development. Asian families tend to be based with an extended family arrangement. Asian families and in particular Muslim, parents are highly protective of their daughters, fearing British societys drugs problems and its undue emphasis on sex Singh Ghuman 1994. In some cultures polygamous marriages are accepted, this is where a person may be married to more than one partner. On the other hand in most cultures monogamous families are more commonly recognised; one single partner. However, it would raise the question as to whether such a family arrangement affects the development of children Alean Al-Krenawi et al investigated this matter. 146 participants were involved in the study; they consisted of children who were involved in either polygamous family or a monogamous family. The children were tested through a questionnaire which was later analysed. The children from monogamous families had higher levels of learning achievement than the children from polygamous families, which in turn meant that the monogamous children adjusted to school framework better, unlike the polygamous children as much. This shows that these children suffer a disadvantage from living within such a large family, as they experience an overall educational disadvantage and social difficulties as well. The Results also showed that the conflict rating of the children from a large family background; polygamous had a higher rating. It was also found that the fathers level of education tended to be inversely correlated with family size in terms of both number of children and number of wives. These results show that due to these learning difficulties children are faced from living in such situations, that now the teachers my become aware of such problems, as it may be assumed that children from polygamous families may drop out of school early, and may be more at risk of falling for bad habits such as drugs and theft. It was stated that the problem should be overcome by focussing on the recognition of polygamy as a particular risk factor, along with the expectation that over time higher levels of paternal education may well lead to smaller families and more attention to the emotional and social needs of the children. Due to the findings issues within the polygamous families such as tension caused from other wives and step siblings, could be worked on, as it may be an issue affecting the childrens development. It could be argued that the wives could perhaps be encouraged to perceive one another as partners rather than opponents, and in turn the half siblings could also foll ow this principle to help improve the overall family relationship within the household. However there are limitations to this research such as, individual differences have not been considered as some children may just not be very into school life, and that the failure to achieve well isnt to do with the family arrangement at home. Another limitation is that the polygamous families that were researched only had two wives, so it cannot be widely generalised to polygamous families as they differ in sizes, therefore it cannot be stated that even larger polygamous families have a bigger affect on childrens development. A further limitation is that the study was based on a sample of one race, which again makes it harder to generalise the results to other races. With all these limitations it must not be forgotten that the research still shows us that living arrangements and differences such as monogamous and polygamous families do impact the children educational development at school to some extent. Nuclear and extended families affect childrens development as some research has suggested that these living arrangements may cause some psychological stress in childhood. An examination of lifestyles within the inner cities of non-industrial countries highlights the changes in family life this was noted by Abdel Rahim Cederblad, 1980 An example of this is from Sudan families as they traditionally consist of three or more generations, with siblings living side by side and sharing domestic duties and economic responsibilities. Marriages occur early and are arranged by parents; they are frequently between cousins or other family relations Abdelrahman Morgan, 1987.Authority in these extended households usually rests with the grandfather. The grandmother plays a central role in child care and the transmission of cultural identity to her grandchildren. In turn, the extended family is embedded within the wider communal structure of the tribe. This type of social structure encourages conformity to standards of conduct which are seen to be acceptable according to tradition and so promotes social stability. At the same time, gives a sense of communal responsibility for the upbringing of children. Up until the age of weaning a mother has the main responsibility for care. After weaning the responsibility for care and discip line is shared within both the immediate family, and to a lesser extent among the other responsible adults living with the immediate family. In the research conducted by Abdel Rahim Cederblad, 1980 the relation between emotional and social development and family structure in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, was examined. Children between the ages of 4 and 9 living in extended and nuclear families were compared on mothers ratings of a range of childhood problems. Analysis revealed that children in nuclear families had more conduct, emotional, and sleep problems, poorer self-care, and were more likely to be over dependent than those living in extended families. They were also less likely to be breast fed, to be weaned later, and to have grandmothers involved in child care. Linear multiple regression revealed that, of these 3 childcare factors, grandmothers involvement was the strongest predictor of normal social and emotional adjustment. The possible protective characteristics of the extended family are discussed in relation to the importance of the grandmother as maternal advisor, social support, and socialization agent. However this research does face some limitations such as results of the study may be influenced by factors not studied here. First, it is possible that mothers reports were affected by some systematic bias in reporting. Although both groups reported spending the same amount of time with their children, reporting bias may be due to differences in the mental health of nuclear and extended family mothers Lancaster, Prior, Adler,1989 or variation in the standards of conduct deemed acceptable by them Sonuga-Barke, Minocha, Taylor, Sandberg. These questions centre on the relation between actual deviance and parental perceptions and cannot be addressed without direct observation of the childs behaviour. Second, the relation between child development and family structure reported in the study might be mediated by the effects of stressful life events, such as migration. In a recent study. El Farouk (1991) examined the makeup of a representative sample of the large (34% of the total population; Population Census Office, 1989) migrant population living in Khartoum. More than half of the 266 migrant families studied included three generations. This is similar to the proportion found in the non migrant population and suggests that migration would not selectively affect childhood adjustment in the nuclear families in the present study. The findings imply that the meaning and protective significance of factors is conditional on cultural context as well as developmental status and history. Global ideals of human conduct operating within different cultures directly influence the meaning and significance of personal and intergenerational relationships within families. The impact of family life on child development is mediated by a set of beliefs about the extent to which a particular family structure is consistent with those ideals. In Sudanese culture, as in many traditional societies, social life is governed by ideals of communal interdependence, intergenerational harmony, and social conformity motivated by feelings of collective responsibility and filial piety. In extended families, the physical proximity, emotional intimacy, and (grand-) parental authority are consistent with these ideals. So far the issues that have been mentioned are that family arrangements can affect children development in educational aspects such as the childrens performance at school, and the differences between nuclear and extended family arrangements in regards to development. Another aspect that some research has found that family arrangements may affect is the nutrition and physical growth of children in their development this was researched by Tinkew and DeJong 2004. They looked into the influence of household structure and resource dilution features. The study aimed to compare the impact of different types of household structures such as single parent, multiple parents, extended and cohabitating, and the influence this had on childrens nutrition. They also aimed to investigate whether household structure and household resources interact to affect child nutrition. The results were collated from the Jamaica 1996 Living Standards Measurement Study Survey and other sources. The findings showed that living in a single parent household and cohabitating household increases the odds of stunting for children. The analysis also indicates that children in single parent families with low income and have siblings are more likely to have low height for age, as well as low income extended families with siblings. The key policy implication that is shown through this study is that household structure is important for understanding childrens nutritional outcomes in the Caribbean. This research was beneficial as it highlighted that household arrangements does have some impact on childrens development in regards to health issues. However, it can be criticised as the findings would be more reliable if a larger sample was used and the use of longitudinal data was used instead of cross sectional data, as this would be useful for capturing changes over time in childrens nutritional statuses as well as changes in household structures. Longitudinal data would be especially useful for understanding how changes in household structure can influence child nutrition given the variability of households in the Caribbean, and other changes in composition across the developmental cycle of the household. It has been suggested that further research should also include measures of parental time allocations which would improve the understanding of how time used as a resource is used to affect child nutrition. Household structures effects could work through a variety of mechanisms, and a careful study of these processes is needed especially with regard to future research on this issue in the Caribbean context. In regards to whet her this research is useful, it shows us that there can be some cultural family arrangement issues that are proven to impact the nutritional development of children showing us that there arent just psychological differences; which most research suggests there is. Overall it could be suggested that there are many cultural variations within many different family arrangements. However, it is not completely clear whether the family arrangement directly affects the childs development for reasons such as every child and their development is different and we therefore cannot pin point what factors specifically affect development. Other factors such as sexual orientation, wealth of families, social status and class are all areas that could be researched further to help link the affects within child development. 3215 meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-35290175484242953332020-01-18T10:56:00.001-08:002020-01-18T10:56:05.238-08:00Mt. EverestThe Choice Should there be a permanent base camp? KJ December 19th, 2011 Should there be a permanent base camp? The choice for a permanent base camp has not been made because the are plenty of good reasons why there should be one. On the other hand there are also plenty of bad reasons why there shouldn't be one. Though the council has not decided completely there have been a few rumors that they might start building in 2014 or 2015. This may become an issue with the people that live in Nepal. The Argument The Good Things The good things about this settlement is that everyone can have comfortable hot showers and a heating system to keep them warm. This is also good because there is a possibility that if it is built then it could lower the chances of polluting the area (more than it already is). That is if recycling bins and trash cans are added. The Bad Things Some of the bad things about the project is that it can cause more pollution instead of lowering the chances of it. The building if not stable enough could collapse because the base camp is a moving glacier. Building this would cost more than $700,000 (not including the cost for electricity and supplies). That would make a sum of about $3,000,000 for when it is first built and and about $2,300,000 for all the supplies and electricity. That probably does not even include the cost of shipping. which would add about $50,000 every time a load of stuff is shipped there. The Problem The problem is that Mount Everest is a moving glacier with an altitude of 17598ft. Also this permanent camp could cause even more pollution than there already is. This is also very costly considering that it is very far from any major towns and it takes several days of trekking to get there, so building a settlement will be difficult and expensive. Also the altitude makes living there very difficult, the people who work in the camp would have to go back to a lower altitude every week or so. Along with that operating and sustaining the camp would be extremely expensive, supplies would take very long to be delivered. The Solution The solution would be to find a way to make it less costly and more convenient for both the people that work there and the guests. The End Thanks for reading meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-27024862951498654212020-01-10T07:20:00.001-08:002020-01-10T07:20:02.379-08:00A Turning PointWalking past the corridor, I saw a student being punished, and I couldn't help but be filled with nostalgia, bad memories. I too was once caught up in such an embarrassing situation, being punished and disgraced in front of my entire class just because of my ââ¬Å"brilliantâ⬠idea which went wrong. While I was in high school Year 10, like everyone else, I was in a celebrative mood jumping for joy, as it was the last week of school before the long school break. However, our laughter and happiness came to an abrupt halt as the form teacher of our class Mr Mann entered the classroom. The entire class groaned and became tense on seeing the stack of red report cards he was carrying. My stomach churned as I already knew that I did not excel in my exam, having failed most of my science subjects as I really detest being in a science stream class instead of arts. Reluctantly, I dragged my heavy feet to the front and took my report card when my name was called out. â⬠I knew it,â⬠I said and gave out a loud sigh when I saw my far from impressive results. Mostly were inked in red. Old fashion type of school but yes, my teacher insisted on our parent's signature on the report card for every exam and I could smell the trouble burning awaiting me at home. I knew I would be punished therefore, overwhelmed with fear, I came out with this ââ¬Å"brilliantâ⬠idea which is to forge out my parent's signature. ââ¬Å"Everything should be fine if I play my cards right,â⬠I said to myself. Next day came D-day, trying to stop trembling like a leaf while handing up my report card, Mr Mann glared at me. Everything was over when he twitched his eyebrows and questioned me, I was caught red handed. He firmly admonished me in front of my whole class. Drama was unfolding before me just like in TV shows. He was hell bent on making a lesson to be learnt to the entire class out of me. ââ¬Å"Well, do you have anything to say?â⬠asked Mr Mann, in his mild and calm manner. I blushed and stood sheepishly as my classmates roared in laughter merciless. Helplessly I stared at the floor fully embarrassed, with eyes filled with tears hoping it to end as soon as possible. Yet that wasn't the end of the horror, my parents were called and now it is a total game over for me. Well, I had to face the music. My parents are loving and kind but once in a blue moon, like a volcano, they erupt! ââ¬Å"You are grounded for a month!â⬠said mother. ââ¬Å"Your allowance is also going to be deducted!â⬠added father. I'm sorry, that's all I could afford to say while tearing up. Looking back at this though it is just two years back, I saw how much this incident had taught me. It taught me that honesty is always the best policy no matter what happens. Putting aside my studies just because it is not something which I prefer over sports do not benefit me in anyway. Cheating does not bring nor benefit me but only brings out more trouble. I also realized that my parents always wanted what's best for me. Giving me loads of education in terms of academic, sports, music and even computer lessons, I never knew it could be that useful in building up a strong character and confidence in me. And whos that grunting. The Frame Narrators is seems to have been written down. You also get the feeling that when Marlow is talking its as if he is trying to understand the meaning of the story for himself. He is also a great story teller and uses delayed decoding by delaying and explaining incidents fully so that we experience them like he did this can be seen when his helmsman has been killed he believes that the helmsman had wrestled a cane from someone ashore but in fact you find out he died as Marlow says a pool full of blood lay very still he realises the helmsman has been struck by one of the natives and was dead. We will write a custom essay on The meaning of the story specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Marlow knew this before he began his yarn and yet he waited until the time within the story when he found out which could give you the impression that it was the first time Marlow had ever told the story aloud. The first narrators view of the Thames suggests the nobility of Britains role in the colonisation of the world; the frame narrator shows explicit and implicit views on it. Explicitly you can see the Frame Narrators view when he says dreams of men, seeds of commonwealth, the germs of empires (page 32) you can see easily that what he is saying gives the impression the colonisation is great. Implicitly you can see his views on Colonisation when he says about the river being unruffled (page 32), which means smooth and calm, and it may mean the Frame Narrator has no troubles with Colonisation as it runs smoothly and therefore effectively. Marlows view on the Thames is seen when he talks about the Romans went there to invade and says that the Thames was once a dark place. He talks about the decent young citizen in a toga (page 34) who can be compared to Kurtz I say this because the young citizen like Kurtz never had restraint and as the wilderness surrounded him he gave in like Kurtz on the Congo. When Marlow arrives in Brussels he refers to the city as a whited sepulchre (page 37) a whited sepulchre implies death, and the phrase whited sepulchre was in the Bible by Jesus as he talks about the Pharisees and Sadducees being grand on the outside but completely the opposite on the inside, and this is what is said about Brussels which is something grand on the outside but something that contains horrors within. This makes the phrase appropriate for Brussels as what Marlow was going to Brussels for being the job down the Congo contained death and horrors, as we find out further on within the novel. This also links in with Imperialism as that contains horrors, which is shown through the job down the Congo. Marlows view of the cruel and often foolish consequences of the trade established by colonialism can be seen in his description of the activities in his journey down the African Coast, where he says that some of the soldiers drowned in the surf but nobody seemed to care, this shows his view as he says that the steamer must go on even though some soldiers may have died in the process of the journey, this there fore means the trade must goes on. Also when he says names that seemed to belong to some sordid farce acted in front of a sinister backcloth (page 41). This gives Marlows view as he says the trading places are part of something sordid which means disgusting and a farce this shows that he believes that the trade is a farce and as the trade is linked with the colonialism, he also thinks thats a farce too. .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .postImageUrl , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:hover , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:visited , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:active { border:0!important; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:active , .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9 .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubcb78411f28f6c16e8ebe42d03a44be9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Literary Review Of Oliver Twist EssayHe also says that there was a touch of insanity in the proceeding (page 42) this gives you his view as if he says the proceedings on the French steamer were insane then he must believe the same about colonialism too, he would think colonialism is insane due to him believing that the natives arent the only ones that need to be civilised people like Kurtz also need to be civilised as they are insane. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-56645961743281175082019-11-26T12:25:00.001-08:002019-11-26T12:25:05.705-08:00Dunkin Donuts Plan Essay ExampleDunkin Donuts Plan Essay Example Dunkin Donuts Plan Essay Dunkin Donuts Plan Essay The Bright Agency Roger Bright- Account Executive Sara Smith- Ad Copy Director Ashley Edwards- Art Director Michelle Taube- Media Director Katie Briggs- IMC Media Sales Director Jennifer Garriques- Research Director Robert Compton- Research Director Executive Summary Our campaign with Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts sets out to re-brand the company, reflective of a company thats expanding. The campaign allots $35,000,000 for the course of a calendar year, specifically January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007. Our goal is to generate more revenue and claim more market share in the coffee house sector. We feel this can be attained by a vigorous national campaign. This campaign will entail advertisements on all the major media facets. Our target audience consists of middle class adults. Characteristically, these middle class adults earn between $40,000 to $100,000 yearly. An increase in coffee sales is a paramount goal of our campaign; these older adults are the best audience to go after. Our campaign will also research the target audience via surveys concluding on how strong the customer base is and possible potential new target audiences. The Dunkinââ¬â¢ campaign will rely heavily on a nationalized television, radio, newspaper, and outdoor advertising plan. The television ads will be featured generally on the cable networks as well as network channels. We will position our ads on programs that are focused towards our target group of middle class adults. The same strategy will apply when positioning our ads on television, radio, and in the newspaper. Other alternate media we will use are outdoor advertisements. We will use around $33,000,000 on advertising. Measuring the effect of our campaign is also important. It will occur on a quarterly basis. Measurements will be done at these times so that Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts can reflect its sales along with the effectiveness of our campaign. This will be done so by viewing television ratings and checking circulation. Our agency was given $35,000,000 to complete the task, of which we devoted the $3. 5 million towards a healthy contingency. Our research and efforts are in hopes of increasing the awareness of a soon to be snack food and coffeehouse giant. Situational Analysis Company Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is a doughnut franchise owned by a parent company, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Brands. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts was founded in Quincy, Massachusetts by Bill Rosenberg in 1950. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts has since been a staple of the snack food sector in the New England geographic market. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts boasts quality doughnuts and pastries, as well as a delicious line of coffee and espresso blends. Today Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts dominates the snack food sector and is increasingly making its mark on the coffee house sector. Market and Industry The restaurant industry, particularly the snack food and coffee house industry is one that is consistently profitable. As it stands it takes around 1/3 of the American dollar spent on food. The restaurant industry will gross on average $1. 4 billion daily. The restaurant industry has had to adapt to the growing demand for healthier food choices. Nonetheless the restaurant industry is forecasted to increase over five percent in the next year and make up four percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The coffee house sector accredits its boom in popularity largely in part to the surge of Starbucks in the late1990s. Since then it has continued to do well in generating high revenue. Statistics show that over 77% of Americans consume some form of coffee beverage. That overwhelming statistic is indicative of the sales boom of the coffee house sector between 2000 and 2005. During that period the coffee house sector developed larger and faster than any other sector in the restaurant industry, citing a 157% increase in sales. The coffee house sector is only expected to grow. Market analysts suggest another 125% increase over the next five years. Situational Analysis Brand The Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts franchise rests its name on its doughnuts, but has seen much success with its coffee sales. Over the course of the last decade, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts has produced a quality line of espresso drinks and coffee blends that have led Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts to the number one spot in coffee-by-the-cup sales. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts also offers other bakery delicacies, breakfast sandwiches, cold drinks, and deli sandwiches. The Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts website: www. dunkindonuts. com provides information on company news, franchising, nutrition, and also allows consumers to order Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts products online. The brand has done well particularly well in its home base in the Northeast. The brand is planning expansion in the West and South. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is virtually unknown in these geographic markets. Consumer Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts target customer is the middle class American, both males and females, ranging in age from 18-45. Their salaries range from $40,000 to $100,000 annually. They are coffee enthusiasts, mainly people on the go, and some families. The ideal Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts consumer is a working professional, with a family. They are generally in their thirties and enjoy a good coffee drink and occasional doughnut before work to get their day started. The Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts consumer is practical and unappreciative of red tape or fancy marketing ploys. Situational Analysis Competitive The restaurant industry is one that is in constant competition, with trends that tend to vary. There will always be persistent competition between sectors (i. e. fast food vs. table-served restaurants; snack food vs. health food, etc. ). Advertising is the paramount step in distinction from the competition. The coffee house sector has become one of the largest growing in food service. The competition does not just start and end with nationalized coffee house chains, but also includes the smaller local coffee house businesses. These ââ¬Å"mom and popâ⬠coffee house endeavors appear more and more in smaller localities as well as large market cities. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts receives the most competition from Kripsy Kreme, Starbucks, and McDonalds. These three brands share the market with Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts in the sectors of snack food restaurant, coffee house, and breakfast foods respectively. Since Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts holds as the largest distributor of coffee-by-the-cup, they will increase their focus on their coffee beverages. In the most cut and dry terms, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts and Starbucks can expect a healthy rivalry in the decade to come, especially with Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts expanding to the West, which houses Starbucks. While McDonalds has dominated the fast food sector and does not appear as obvious competition, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts poses an indirect threat to the McDonalds breakfast line and vise versa. The Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts franchise will triple its number of franchises to over 15,000 stores, which will surpass most fast food chains. Competition will surely be created out of such a big expansion. SWOT Analysis Strengths: 1. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts has a reputation for brewing high quality coffee for more than five decades 2. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is Americaââ¬â¢s largest retailer of coffee-by-the-cup, serving nearly 1 billion cups of brewed coffee each year. . On an average day, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts sells more than 30 cups of freshly brewed coffee each second. 4. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts uses 100% Arabica coffee beans and has its own coffee specifications, which are recognized by the industry as a superior grade of coffee. 5. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts serves nearly 1 billion cups of brewed coffee every year or approximately 2. 7 million cups a day. 6. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts mails coupons to their customers. Weaknesses: 1. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts uses media to advertise while Krispy Kreme has never spent any money on advertising. Opportunities: 1. Franchises available. 2. The opening of new stores. Threats: 1. People wanting to eat healthier (low calorie/low carb). 2. Starbucks entry into breakfast sandwiches. 3. McDonalds gourmet coffee. Target Market Analysis Our target audience will specifically be made up of males and females ranging in age from 18-45. The middle class will account for up to 45% of all Dunkin Donutsââ¬â¢ purchases. A large part of our goal for this campaign is to increase coffee sales, and according to statistics these are the people who drink coffee the most. Our target audience will earn in between $40,000 and $100,000 annually. A large part of this demographic will come from family units. Our main focus goes towards people on the go to get you in and out as fast as possible. A Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts typical customer is like John. John is in his mid-thirties. He is a working professional with three young children. He enjoys watching sports and working out in his free time. John likes to get his day started with a double espresso latte, giving him energy to get through the morning. Every Sunday, John takes his kids to Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts to enjoy a light breakfast before their little league games. Objectives Marketing Our marketing objective is to increase our sales by a substantial amount, ranging from 12 to 15% over the course of January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007. This is going to be achieved through an increase in the reach and frequency of our advertising and publicity efforts. We want to attract new customers in the target audience of middle class adults, and turn them into repeat customers. If we can expand our consumer base by 5% and thus realistically generate ten dollars more per year from each new customer, it would result in a large growth in revenue, well worth the increased exposure costs. Advertising Our objective is to increase the awareness of our national campaign among our targeted audience that is made up of male and females between the ages of 18-45 years old (middleaged corporate), by 12-15% from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007. According to our statistics, 25-34 year olds are who drink coffee most. Our target audience will earn in between $40,000 and $100,000 annually. Middle class makes up about 45% of all Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts purchases. Media Objectives Our suggested goal within our campaign comprised of nationalized television, radio, and outdoor print advertisements was to reach about 85% of our target market. That target market consists of middle aged and middle class consumers. Our research has cited that these are the people who frequently drink coffee. We intend to use various media facets, pulsing in more profitable months with higher frequency, than in our low months. The focus of our advertisement is to create awareness of Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts, with special focus to their coffee line. We feel this is the best way to generate the sales towards our goal of at least a 12 to 15% increase in sales. Media Tactics Outdoor ($1,000,000) Outdoor advertising can persuade commuters to impulse buy Dunkin Donuts. We plan on attracting the eye of commuters by using bright colors and catchy phrases. Billboards will be placed in locations such as Texas, Arizona, California, and Colorado. These locations were specifically chosen since we are expanding our franchises into new markets. Newspaper ($3,023,380) Newspapers are used in our campaign because of their reach. We will be using inserts in national newspapers because it will give us more control in reaching our target audience. By providing full color inserts in the Sunday papers, we will not only reach our target audience, but broaden it as well, by catching the attention of potential customers. Another notable aspect of newspapers is the frequency in which they are distributed. By using a national newspaper such as USA Today; we can not only broaden our reach, but also the number of times readers are exposed to a specific Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts advertisement. It would be ideal to place these advertisements in the food and beverage, or dinning sections of the fore mentioned paper, but depending on its distribution and relation to our target market other sections may open up. Newspapers also allow for the ever needed public relation story, by getting articles printed that deal with our brand and efforts we can not only keep the consumer up to date on our current state, but also build up our brand image. Through the use of these tactics and a correct circulation measurement needed to make sure we have our target market in mind, newspapers seem to be one of our top means of distribution for the cost. Media Tactics Radio ($2,361,665) In reviewing our campaign, collectively, we have determined that radio would be one of the better options to go with in means of advertising. We find it would be beneficial to use radio spots that are generally 15 to 30 seconds long in a sense that they will be short and to the point. The most effective time slot for our kind of advertisements would be early morning and evening, giving the working person more incentive to stop by a Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts on their way to and from their work place. These ads should be placed on syndicated radio programming as well as filler in between local radio programming. The use of these advertisement spots will hopefully increase revenue in two of our peak times. The commuters going to work in the morning and the commute back from work in the late evening. Media Tactics Television ($26,718,945) Cable Television (TBS, Food Network, and ESPN) Cable television is a media source that allows Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts to directly target the consumers on specific stations. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts finds this as a useful technique because of its ability to provide high reach and high ratings. Cable television is a reliable source that will help Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts advertise directly to the consumers. The airing of Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts advertisements will be during the hours of 5 to 10 a. m. nd then from 5 to 10 p. m. These time spots will help Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts not only achieve high ratings, but guarantee that the customers are getting exposed to the advertisements. The following is a list of television shows that will be advertising for Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts: TBS-during movies for adults and children; Food Network-any cooking shows during the times specified to reach adults; and ESPNduring sport shows and games to reach the male audience. Since Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is a national campaign, advertising on cable television will allow us to not only reach our target audience more but expand to potential customers. Network Television (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC) A television network is a distribution network for television content where a central operation provides programming for many television stations. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts advertisements will be aired during the hours of 5 to 10 a. m. and 5 to 10 p. m. ; reaching our target audience who will be considering breakfast options for that day or the next. Media Scheduling High The months of January, February, March, November and December are deemed our ââ¬Å"highâ⬠months. This means we can expect a higher volume in sales during these months. Advertisements centered around holiday promotions need to have a higher frequency and reach. Holidays generate spending; therefore the brunt of our spending must be dedicated to these months. Medium April, May, September and October are considered our medium months. We can expect a steady patronage from our target market in these months. These are deemed our medium months for lack of heightened spending. However, the months of September and October are especially crucial for advertising due to new seasons of television programming. Advertising on the right shows at the right times will hopefully propel our medium months into high months. Low June, July and August are considered our ââ¬Å"lowâ⬠months. This part of the fiscal year we can expect a slight decline in patronage. We will spend less money this month to avoid waste. Families are a large part of our target demographic, and since families take these times to vacation, we feel strong advertising will be ineffective. Television networks usually show their reruns during the summer months also. Creative Objectives Client Dunkinââ¬â¢ Brands Inc. : Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts. Our client Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is a snack food sector giant that has enjoyed major success out of the New England area and East. Project Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is currently in the works for a mass expansion. They are in the works to be one of the largest food service chains in the country; tripling their stores to 15,000 nationwide. The company is in need of serious brand awareness to go along with its new nationalizing expansion. Background/Overview Our campaign suggests marketing towards middle aged, middle class adults (incomes ranging from $40,000 to $100,000). Typically, this demographic is heavy coffee consumers. Our advertisements will give a lot more focus to coffee products in the future and present Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts as a practical, ââ¬Å"non-trendyâ⬠choice for ââ¬Å"middle Americansâ⬠for snacks and coffee. Objectives Our objectives are to stand out from other coffee house and snack food chains. We will also convey messages that express practicality, quality, speed, and good service. We wish to give coffee drinkers a practical place to get a snack and coffee that doesnââ¬â¢t have all the bells and whistles of the leading coffee competitor, Starbucks. Creative Objectives Executions We plan to advertise with a healthy nationalized campaign. We will implore the usage of television, radio, print and outdoor media. We will advertise using the pulsing technique, which will give more focus to higher volume months (i. e. November, December). Coupling these methods with a great public relations campaign will produce brand awareness, thus increasing sales. Measurable Objectives Being able to measure success is important to the client, and to us, the Agency. Obviously, the best way to measure an advertising campaignââ¬â¢s successes is to see if the sales goals were met throughout the fiscal year. If we can meet our goal of invoking awareness, specifically Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts coffee line, we hope to increase company sales 12 to 15%. In order to be aware and accountable for the success of our advertisements we will stay current with circulation and Nielsen ratings to ensure our advertisements are reaching our target demographic with the best media vehicles possible. Budget Analysis When given our budget of $35,000,000, the majority of that was spent on the visual aspects of advertising, mainly being television advertisements. Our group as a whole decided to go for the visual aspect in this generation of time. Visual advertising has more of an effect on the target audience as a whole. Almost half of our budget was used on this specific medium. The next largest portion of our budget went strictly to radio advertising. This medium would be beneficial to our products market in a sense that a majority of Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts customers are working class professionals and typically stop in to get their every day coffee and/or doughnuts. Another portion of the budget was used on our outdoor advertisements and newspapers. Collectively, our group has giving outdoor advertisements about one million dollars towards billboards. As for newspapers, it was decided that a newspaper insert would be included in every Sunday national newspaper. The rest of our expenses consisted of making Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts t-shirts and a universal coffee mug. The coffee mugs and t-shirts were very inexpensive to provide and sell to get money back to Dunkin. The remaining amount of money, around $2,000, is used solely for what ever cost differences there may be. Advertising Tactics Slogan Our slogan is Delightfully Dunkinââ¬â¢. This slogan is showing consumers that our products are delightful and will steer people into wanting to consume our product. We wanted to use a slogan that made our products more appealing to the customer. The alliteration of the words Delightfully Dunkinââ¬â¢ makes the slogan catchier. Radio The purpose of this ad was to convey a message to the public that Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts products are always ready to go at any time for the convenience of every customer. Using a short and sweet message to the consumer with a little humor involved is a creative way to draw attention to the company. Rise and Shine with Dunkinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ is simply an informative commercial about the types of coffees Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts offers. Television The Commercial titled ââ¬Å"Holidays with Dunkinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ is geared to the holiday season because people are always eating out during the holidays since they are busy shopping, spending time with their family, and traveling. The commercial shows th at this family is happy with their purchase, therefore conveying that Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is a family oriented business. The television spot titled ââ¬Å"Rookies Fetch the Dunkinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ is marketed to the many office professionals that frequent Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts for catering needs. The ad is meant to be humorous and shows the plight of a young corporate worker who finds out he needs to cater a board meeting in ten minutes. This advertisement highlights another one of the themes we wish to get across which is ââ¬Å"quick serviceâ⬠. Advertising Tactics Outdoor The billboards will be placed in designated areas in the Southwest. The holiday billboard is geared to family travelers that are on the road during the holiday season, looking for a quick bite to eat. The coffee billboard strives for the attention of coffee drinkers. The message being that our coffee is a delightful treat. This slogan will get people to steer towards Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts rather than another place. Newspaper In the newspaper advertisement, we will be using a gift certificate that will be printed in national newspapers that will give each subscriber in the month of December a free doughnut and coffee. This will show our frequent customers that we care about them and will also provide us with new cliental. Also, we will be using a newspaper insert that will provide our customers with the weekly deals. Punch Card The punch card is used for coffee consumers, this will provide the customers an incentive to keep coming back. When using the punch card they will need to purchase 10 coffees and will receive their 11th coffee free. By using all of these media tactics we will be able to reach our target audience in numerous ways, showing them that we should be their number one choice. We felt that using all these media outlets would be a successful way in meeting our campaign requirements. . Sales Promotion Tactics Promotional Objectives Our over all goal is to increase sales for Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts by 12 to 15% from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007. We have broken down this goal into three main promotional objectives. The first objective is to increase holiday sales. We will be doing this by placing a holiday coupon in Sunday papers. The second promotional objective is to increase sales among the target audience of the working middle class business professionals. To achieve this objective, we will be offering a monthly drawing for participating customers to enter to win free breakfast for their office department. The last promotional objective is to raise money for the Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts charity, Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. We will achieve this objective by offering a specialty refillable Mug. 0% of each mug sold will be given directly to Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. This objective will help raise money for Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts charity and encourage customers to continue purchasing Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donutââ¬â¢s coffee for the discounted price. Coupons Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will be offer a holiday coupon in the month of December. This coupon is for a complementary doughnut and cup of hot coffee. The coupon will be inserted in the Sunday newspaper. This will be a good way to increase the holiday sales especially since Christmas advertisements often get lost in the clutter of the holiday rush. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts wants to break thought this clutter and use the holiday rush to their advantage. Also with offering the holiday coupon, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts sales will increase because the coupon will encourage new customers to come into the store to try their complementary doughnut and hot cup of coffee. In doing this, Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will hopefully make new loyal customers and the customers who are already loyal, this will be our holiday gift to them. Sales Promotion Tactics Sweepstakes Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will offer a monthly sweepstakes. All Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts customers are encouraged to put their business card in a bowl located next to the register. The more visits, the more chances to win. Every month each participating Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donut franchise will draw one business card. The winning card will win breakfast for everyone in their department at work. The breakfast consists of a variety of doughnuts and coffee. We hope that this little incentive will encourage people in the workplace to rely on Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts to satisfy their hunger. Price-Off Deals PriceDunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will offer the option of purchasing a specialty refillable mug. The mug will be refillable at a discounted price, it is also a fundraiser for Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts has made it their corporationââ¬â¢s philanthropy to sponsor and help raise money for Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospitals located all around the United Sates. 10% of the original purchase price of the mug will go to the hospital. Then for every refill, 10 cents will be donated to the hospital. The mug is beneficial to Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts because it will not only bring money to Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts but will also help the Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. This mug will keep coffee drinkers coming back for more coffee because they can refill it at a reduced price. Public Relations Tactics Public Relations Objectives The public relations objectives cover three different goals: forming a good relationship with the press, building brand awareness, and raising money for Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts wants to build a good relationship with the press since the media holds power over the people. The media is also how Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will send most of their information about events to the public. They will do this through press releases and media kits, in hopes that it will be printed in the paper as an article. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will provide media kits to local and national newspapers. The media kit will better help the press find information and pictures needed to cover stories on Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts. The media kit will include: A cover letter to the paper Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts business card with contact information Press releases. Background information. Photographs. Copies of the logo and slogan. Information about the different events Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is hosting. Coupons for free samples of coffee and doughnuts. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will also keep the media informed on special events and changes with the business through press releases. This will inform the press of events, that they then have the option of creating an article. The press releases will give them all the information needed to write the article without having to do any research. This will ideally help Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts have their name in the newspapers without having to purchase advertisements. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will also send a fact sheet inviting newspaper reporters to attend specific events. A fact sheet is a good way to build a more personal relationship with newspapers. Public Relations Tactics Event Sponsorships/ Charity Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts will be partnering with Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital. This tournament will gain Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts immediate credibility and recognition through sponsoring the events. Evaluation Our campaign provides a number of great strategies and suggestions to ensure that the snack food sector giant does increasingly well over the period of the next year and well into their future expansion. Using coffee as a product focus we hope to take a larger share of the coffeehouse market and overall raise sales 12 to 15%. Dunkinââ¬â¢ Brands must make their title franchise marketable in the way of practicality. Our messages must show consumers that we lack a lot of the hoopla and that we are more genuine in serving good products. In marketing ourselves as the practical, Starbucks alternative, we stand to profit by reaching a broader audience than Starbucks, thus taking a larger share of their market. We found it best to do an unilateral campaign, with everything coming together on a national scale. This is best granted the expansion Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts is making all over the U. S. The pulsing technique is the most efficient part of our media plan. Pulsing ensures that we reach our target audience during more profitable months, being careful not to spend money when we donââ¬â¢t have to. This is an effective way to reach the project 85% of our target market; whether it is during a popular television program or during a holiday month where commercialism is heightened. Our research lead us to many conclusions as to what could viably work and what wouldnââ¬â¢t. As far as competition, we didnââ¬â¢t see any room to grow competing with Dairy Queen. As they are an ice cream treat based company, we feel that ice cream could fit into a totally different branch of the snack food sector in itself. The Bright Agency has set up a plan that could drive the Dunkinââ¬â¢ Donuts chain well past the 15% goal we have set forth. It wasnââ¬â¢t a country so much as an expanse of loosely defined sheikhdoms spreading over some 32,000 square miles (83,000 sq. km), about the size of the state of Maine. Before the Emirates For centuries the region was mired in rivalries between local emirs on land while pirates scoured the seas and used the statesââ¬â¢ shores as their refuge. Britain began attacking pirates to protect its trade with India. That led to British ties with the Trucial Statesââ¬â¢ emirs. The ties were formalized in 1820 as Britain offered protection in exchange for exclusivity: the emirs, accepting a truce brokered by Britain, pledged not to cede any land to ââ¬â¹any powers or make any treaties with anyone except Britain. They also agreed to settle subsequent disputes through British authorities. The subservient relationship was to last a century and a half, until 1971.ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹ Britain Gives Up By then, Britainââ¬â¢s imperial overreach was exhausted politically and bankrupt financially. Britain decided in 1971 to abandon Bahrain, Qatar, and the Trucial States, by then made up of seven emirates. Britainââ¬â¢s original aim was to combine all nine entities into a united federation. Bahrain and Qatar balked, preferring independence on their own. With one exception, the Emirates agreed to the joint venture, risky as it seemed: the Arab world had, until then, never known a successful federation of disparate pieces, let alone bicker-prone emirs with egos enough to enrich the sandy landscape. Independence: December 2, 1971 The six emirates that agreed to join in the federation were Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Sharjah, and Quwayn. On Dec. 2, 1971, the six emirates declared their independence from Britain and called themselves the United Arab Emirates. (Ras al Khaymah initially opted out, but eventually joined the federation in February 1972). Sheikh Zaid ben Sultan, Emir of Abu Dhabi, the richest of the seven emirates, was the unionââ¬â¢s first president, followed by Sheikh Rashid ben Saeed of Dubai, the second-richest emirate. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have oil reserves. The remaining emirates do not. The union signed a treaty of friendship with Britain and declared itself part of the Arab Nation. It was by no means democratic, and rivalries among the Emirates didnââ¬â¢t cease. The union was ruled by a 15-member council, subsequently reduced to seven- one seat for each of the unelected emirs. Half the 40-seat legislative Federal National Council is appointed by the seven emirs; 20 members are elected to 2-year terms by 6,689 Emiratis, including 1,189 women, who are all appointed by seven emirs. There are no free elections or political parties in the Emirates. Iranââ¬â¢s Power Play Two days before the emirates declared their independence, Iranian troops landed on Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf and the two Tunb islands that dominate the Straits of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. Those islands belonged to Rais el Khaima Emirate. The Shah of Iran contended that Britain had wrongfully granted the islands to the Emirates 150 years before. He was retaking them, he alleged, to look after oil tankers traveling through the Straits. The Shahââ¬â¢s reasoning was more expedience than logic: the emirates had no way to endanger oil shipments, though Iran very much did. Britain's Enduring Complicity in Complications The Iranian troop landing, however, was arranged with Sheikh Khaled al Kassemu of the Sharja Emirate in exchange for $3.6 million over nine years and Iranââ¬â¢s pledge that if oil were discovered on the Island, Iran and Sharja would split the proceeds. The arrangement cost Sharjas ruler his life: Shaikh Khalid ibn Muhammad was gunned down in a coup attempt. Britain itself was complicit in the occupation as it explicitly agreed to let Iranian troops take over the Island one day before independence. By timing the occupation on Britainââ¬â¢s watch, Britain was hoping to relieve the emirates of the burden of an international crisis. But the dispute over the islands hung over relations between Iran and the Emirates for decades. Iran still controls the islands. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-28900812426373681652019-11-21T02:25:00.001-08:002019-11-21T02:25:04.326-08:00Iranian revolution Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 wordsIranian revolution - Research Paper Example As business came up, the standards of living started to rise and the death rates began to decrease due to improvements made in the local hospitals.Pahlevi Shah introduced westernization program in the country and this to some extent help in the economic development of the country in terms of trade improvement.1 In the year 1941, the Germans wanted to seize the oil fields of Iran as they took advantage of the countryââ¬â¢s poor developments in terms of the economy which made the country weak and could not protect itself from outside threats. However, the Soviet Union and Britain joined forces to protect the oil fields of Iran from German seizure Shah abdicated because of his Allied presence and friendliness to Alexiââ¬â¢s powers. Muhammad Reza Shah, the son of Pahlevi Shah took over the throne and adopted the policy of pro-Allied. The Iranian government in the year 1945 requested for the withdrawal of occupying troops since it came to word that the Soviet Union forces were in some way encouraging separatist movements in some of the Northern provinces of Iran and in 1946, the troops were withdrawn from the country. The control of the oil industry was the main reason why conflicts arose in Iran in the year 1950. The wealth that was being generated from the oil trade was so huge and this led to a major political crisis in the country since prominent people in the country started fighting for control of the oil industry.2 In 1951, Muhammad Mossadegh was appointed prime minister and his relationship with Shah was not encouraging. They kept on fighting each other and in the 1953, Shah dismissed the prime minister. Mossadegh resisted yielding and this forced Shah to flee to Rome. Riots were experienced for three consecutive days and at last Royalist won back Teheran control and this made Shah to return and Mossadegh to be jailed. This sample had 364 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Asian Americans from the entire United States. Intersectionality connects to the diversity of Asian American people through the difficulties in communication. Often when in public places, the Asian American people fear to talk because they will be oppressed due to their inadequate knowledge of the native English language. Therefore, to emphasize on discrimination based on the diversity of the Asian American culture, many people from this race miss various educational scholarships based on their racial backgrounds. The educational experience of many Asian Americans is biased. To drive the social agenda of the Asian American community of affirmative action, equity must be allowed to prevail in the selection processes of students set to join universities. The excessive acceptance by the educational establishments on the previous cases of racial discrimination threaten the authorities to face stern legal actions form the social change activists. In fact, intersectionality in the education system is prime in the classroom balance experience in multiple learning institutions of the United States. Furthermore, affirmative action requires the equal enrollment of the minority into the prestigious educational systems, to eliminate the educational segregation attached to racial diversity. The immigration experiences of the Asian Americans present a partisan treatment of the immigrants based on their racial background. The continuous efforts by the elected members of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) indicate the difficult requirements that the authorities have put in place to discourage the inhabitation of undocumented immigrants in the United States. Such provisions as the military enlistment and the requirement of good moral conduct cast the Asian American community in the bad picture as they require many strict eligibility criteria to be permanent legal residents of the United States. meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-374080100246324502.post-6027177049949558012019-11-16T23:41:00.001-08:002019-11-16T23:41:07.798-08:00Vulnerable Adults Essay Example for Free Vulnerable Adults Essay Introduction Health service is defined as a top most service that is related to the diagnosis and treatment of disease, or the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health (Capezuti, Siegler and Mezey, 2007). There are personal and non personal health services. In UK, National Health Service (NHS) launched in the year 1948. Now it is the worldââ¬â¢s largest publically funded health service. The health service in NHS is adorned with efficiency and comprehensive to provide maximum help and support for the needed people. Social care is defined as a profession where people work in partnership with those who experience marginalisation or disadvantage or who needs special care and support, vulnerable people leaving in the community and in the residential care ( Miller, Vandome and McBrewster, 2009). The policies and the legislations for support the caring and supporting the elder people are very important and it should be cared by each health professionals and by the society (http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/socialcare/index.htm). Care quality commission provides the assurance for the quality of care and support for the residence in the care homes residential homes with the support of policies and legislations in the England. The aim of this essay is to identify the law that is related to vulnerable adults is the lack of resources. Literature review In definition, a vulnerable adult is a person aged over the sixteen and not able to protect or take care of himself. There are number of reasons behind it; they are illness, physical disability, mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency and old age. The children act 1989 offer social workers and local authorities a clear legal framework to go along with their duties and obligations. This act is to provide maximum help and support for the children with its significant resources. This act got passed on the basis of simplifying the child care legislation that is exciting (Gupta, Playfer and Bhowmick, 2008). However, it is clear that for vulnerable adults it is difficult to find out a unifying statue, but instead there is some fragmented legislation that is difficult to locate and implement in an effective way. As the reason for a social worker and other care provider it is difficult to carry their skill, knowledge, experience and sensitivity for the support of the vulnerable adults. In this particular area, mental health legislation and community care lead the provision of services offering some regulations and guidance. But there are some confusion can be found out these regulations and guidance for the health providers. As the result it is a confused area to provide the needed duties and obligations from the part of the care providers. It is clear that there are some specific written policies to support the vulnerable adults, however with the involvement of different agencies in the protection of vulnerable adults it is still in confusion thinking that who is the right responsible to provide help and support. To rectify all these problems, NHS trust, social service department and all other related health services organisation should work together for a better result. But unfortunately th is is not the case. Care in the community According to the Health and Social Care Bill 2011, it gives an importance to the care , general health and other social issues. The social issues and care is very important and it should be cared by the medical professionals and other publics. The care and support for the adults in the society is very important and it should be valued for each and every persons especially by the health professionals. The Health and Social Care Bill was introduced in 19 January in 2011 in the parliament and the major part of this include with the modernisation in the medical facilities and world class health care delivering by the health professionals. The caring of the adults is very important and it also very important to give the modern and effective facilities to the adults and the other public (http://www.info4local.gov.uk/documents/related-links/1820651). The community care is aimed to offer help and support for both the vulnerable adult and their carer. The first step is to provide help for vulnerable adults is the recognition of him. Since the lacking of collaboration with multi agency and resources in majority of the local authorities and primary care trusts it would be unrecognised with the arrangements or referrals for the assessments related to needs (Baggett, 1989). This problem takes place with the lack of information and knowledge of the care providers since they are lacking of knowledge with the present legislation. It leads to more spending and needless action to provide maximum help and support for the vulnerable adults in the needed time. Most of the vulnerable adults are unaware of the help that is to be provided; there should be an immediate action to prevent this situation from worsening. Most of the adults are too proud seeking their help and needs from the care providers (Backhaus, 2011). For example, the visitors of the adults in hospital give the more support to offer help and support from the care providers. But there are some adults those who are avoided especially in majority of situation and their condition is getting worsening. Section 46 of the National Health Service and community care act 1990 defines the care plans and services to be provided for the needed people. It includes with laundry services, meals on wheels, residential care and social work. This section is a leading one to uplift the quality of care provider to maintain his service and help for the needed people. According to the local authorities the meaning of need because of financial constraints it guides to procedural bias and restriction of services. It clearly defines that the lack of resources with the law related to vulnerable adults and this area needed a special care. Old age According to the ââ¬ËPromoting Health and Well Beingââ¬â¢ that is a standard which used by the national service frame work in Wales, they care about the older people and they gives some guidelines and the standard line for the old age lives. The major points which include with this are strategy for the nutrition and the well being of the older people, active and healthy life style of the people who lived in Wales, frame works for actions and National service frame work for diabetes, mental health and coronary heart diseases (http://cymru.gov.uk/topics/olderpeople/health/?skip=1lang=en). In old age a person comes in to the position of vulnerability with the reasons of not been provided adequate services and help or being a victim of some kind of abuse or neglect. As far as the duty of a social worker is concerned with old people, there should be some kind of a special treating on the basis of respect to provide maximum help and support for the old age people. Their voice should be valuable and heard with its prior important. On the basis of human rights 1998, a social worker should respect the human rights of adults, right to privacy, right to liberty and right to fair trial. A social worker should be friendly and can work in partnership with service user to make eligible the service users to be feeling as comfortable and supported (Duquenoy, George and Kimppa, 2008). Their needs skills and professional judgement from the part of the social worker to provide the needs of the adults and also to protect them. Since there are no laws to old people but for children, child act 1989, a social worker should be capable of with the legislation from different areas to offer the better results for the service users. In clear words, if a social worker is trained with specialist knowledge he becomes more positive to offer his better result. It is unmistakably true that the availability of the resources in the local authority plays and important impact to provide support and care for the old people and it is different in regions (Kamp and Hvid, 2012). It shows that it takes place with the lacking of proper application of the law. For example, the health services and public health act 1968, (HSPHA)ââ¬â¢s state that the local authority may take arrangements to offer some services that is based on the well fare of older people. This wording act canââ¬â¢t take a major part to provide the obligations on the local authorities related to their better services, but only grants them power to do so. It is evident that if there is some problem with funding or services there may be a lot of old people canââ¬â¢t access the needed help and support from it. The National Health Service and community service at 1990 (NHS, CCA) S46 needs that every local authority must have a plan for their community care and they should be regular to make sure for the well fare of older people. It is the legislation that is important in some manner but it is failure in opening an account about the solid duty that is related to the local authorities to offer the help and support for the older people. The National Health Service Act, 1977 (NHSA) schedule 8, is aimed for providing services for the elder people who live in the local authority. This help is include with shopping, cooking, cleaning etc. it appears that a fame obligation on the local authority to offer the help and support. When an old person is recognised as to be given help and support from the part of the local authority, it is questionable that local authority is capable of helping and supporting of needed person. But from the part of the serviced user, in most of the cases the ultimate help from the local authority is not in a full result. And as the reason, the service from the local authority is not as much as improved than they started from. Residential accommodation The national assistance act 1948 (NAA) S.21 defines about the duties and obligations of the local authority to offer the accommodation for residence. As far as most of the laws connected to the adults is concerned, all those ones is included the right duties and obligations to provide help for the older people from the part of the local authorities. For example, the NAA 1948 (Choice of accommodation) directions 1992 were introduced to make the adults with accommodation and other needs. However the needed people are paid a specified amount. As the reason, the freedom of choice is cancelled since there are financial implications. Residential care is provided as an easily accessible one to 24 hour care home like it is the carefulness of local authority. Since there is choice, majority of the people would like to stay in the home, it is hard for a social worker to balance the value of his social work based on oppressive practice empowerment with financial implications and partnership and to be a well service provider with maximum help and support for the service user (Williams, 1992). The liberty of an adult is given with much priority. However in some cases, it is unavoidable for their own health safety and safety of others compulsory removals have been done. It means that it is the duty of a social worker to offer maximum support and help in the home environment itself (Norman and Redfern, 1997). It is significant to clarify that in residential homes there should be a high quality of caring and supporting. In some cases people in residential care has been exploited with neglect and employee abuse. The care standard act 2000 got introduced in order to make sure a regulatory system that is able to capable of delivering a high quality service with all its concerns (Burchell, 2000). In April 2002 with upgrading the services for vulnerable adults and children national care standard commission regulated the services. It includes four main components. They are monitoring, providing national bench marks, representing the consumer and encouraging the development of better services. It guarantees a new protection for vulnerable adults and it make sure to avoid the unsuitable people is not allowed to work with vulnerable adults (Williams, 1992). It established a general social care council for England and care council for Wales. It came to action with its first step as an effective act but the lacking of funding and human resources stopped its implementation with full perfection. In the care standard acts 2000, it mentions that there should be high quality social care worker provided with high standards of training. But it became questionable with the lack of funding, qualified trainers. In the article done by David Brindle, mentions that in UK the number of abuse against elderly people is alarming and it is growing as a top most problem to be rectified. Research shows that when the staffs are well trained and educated the abuse against elderly people is restricted or no longer a problem in the social care field. It means there are some staffs that are stress, over worked and feels undervalued can be the reason for abuse on adults. Studies prove that in some working area the care workers are not valued well, in some working environment they are stressed highly with their over working and hard working (Lechner and Neal, 1999). These are the problems that lead them to unleash their anger on elderly people and it comes to a result like abuse. It is estimated that there are 800,000 untrained staffs are involved in working with older people. If there is an action on elder abuse it may cost 600 pound each to make sure that they had recognised qualifications according to the charity. There are some potential employees have become part in abuse. In that case it is difficult to identify them and it should be the duty of a social care worker to guide and control himself at first. He should do his best with the support of good practice and vigilance. There should be consistency from the part of the employers, rigour, thoroughness in the implementation of needed checks and procedures that are apt in each and every time. Lacking of time, money or resources may be the problem with the employees. In other case, lacking of qualified and skilled employees with their leaving jobs is another problem. All together it is difficult to maintain an employee in an organisation providing his basic things. First of all there should be advanced type of training from the part of the organisation for the employees. It should help the employees to get matured and to know the rights and responsibilities in their duties to be done. Secondly providing value of an employee offering good salary and to give him comfortable shifting time to work is essential. It will enable him to feel comfortable in his working environment and to follow the duties and responsibility of his work. Thirdly, to stop the quitting jobs of employees an organisation should find out some strategies and techniques to retain their employees in their organisation (Roit, 2010). As far as abuse on elders is concerned from the part of the social care workers, the above said things are significant to rectify the problem to a great extent. Mental Health There are a lot of policies and legislations which related to it in the case of older people are established by the governments in the European countries especially in England. The elder people should be cared and support by the other people and society in their final stage of life and the value of humanity is considered by the each legislation and policies that established by the government. The law on mental health is very much as same as the law that is related to the groups of vulnerable adults. It is needed updating and consolidation. The department of health defines that there are some changes in mental health services with new drug treatments, different patterns of care, which is commonly seen in people treated in the community than in institutions and also wider role for other therapeutic approaches, these things have made a different landscape. As the reason modern mental health legislation is needed to reflect that landscape. Since the law has got updated approved social wo rker should be able to aware of his power and duties under the mental health act 1983. It is clear that the numbers of mentally ill patients are alarming and the treatment they get within the community is not fulfilled with its perfection. It needs support networks, more approved social workers and also better home services. But it is sad that the mentioned things are working efficiently very scarcely and the government should be able to provide extra funding to support their care in the community (Fulmer, Foreman and Walker, 2001). The national assembly for Wales started the adult mental health services strategy with four main key points. They are (1) Equity- it means, mental health service should be provided for the needed people with its perfection. (2) Empowerment- it means service users and carers should work together to find out a better strategy to help and support the mental health patients. (3) Effectiveness ââ¬â there should be some effective intervention provided by mental health services that is needed for improving the quality of life. (4) Efficiency- the services of mental health should be capable of using the resources perfectly and they should care the public money is spent with accountability. In England it is questionable that mentally ill patients are treated well or not. In the past years there were good help and support for mentally ill patients from the part of the hospitals providing 63,000 beds in the year 1988. But in the year 2000, it was halved with 34, 3000 beds. Considering this number of beds and above said reasons there should be well planned strategies to provide maximum help and support for the mentally ill patient and also they should be in secure accommodation. Conclusion In conclusion, legislations, policies and guidelines for the caring and supporting for the older people are very important and effective in providing good and standard service. The government in the England and other European countries are providing a lot of rules, legislations, and policies to provide the support and good caring and support for the elder people in the society. Most of the legislations and the principles are followed by the each and every health professionals and it support to provide a standard and supporting care for the elder people. It is difficult for a social worker to provide maximum help and support for the vulnerable adults, to check it the care workers should ask questions by themselves and value the judgements by them related to the services that they provided. They should be capable of understanding where a person is in capable of taking decisions especially like a mentally ill patient. It means, the care worker should be the ultimate health provider apart from policies and procedures from the government. It means the more a social care worker is capable of handling his duty with its full perfection, the more he becomes available to the needs of service users. In the case of skilled employees in a health care organisation, there are some problems like burnout; quitting their jobs etc. these problems should be settled in with the perfect strategies from the government and health organisations as well. As far as the vulnerability of the adults is concerned there are some lack of clear legislation that hinters the correct implementation of the law and also the ambiguity of the law and all these things contribute to the lack of resources. Though viewed by many as a simple childrenââ¬â¢s tale, if it is taken into a little more depth one will find that is a brilliant satire on the English system of government. Indeed, Alice in Wonderland is a brilliant novel written by a brilliant author. The main character of this novel is Alice. Throughout the story she has conflicts with many of the characters along with herself. Her main conflict is to return home from Wonderland and to become an adult. While she is in Wonderland she is faced with many other, not so important conflicts. Most of them are choices that may lead her to people or places that she might or might not want to meet or see. Throughout the story there are many supporting characters that both help and hinder Alice during journey through Wonderland. The first character that Alice first comes in contact with is the White Rabbit. As a character he is always in a rush, this is made apparent throughout the story. Alice first sees him while he is on the way to Wonderland. She chooses to follow him, and she falls down a rabbit hole, thus finding the entrance to Wonderland. The only other character that was influential in my opinion was the The Queen of Hearts. The Queen is a very bitter person. She made everyone aro... meredithpearso38http://www.blogger.com/profile/04595556450514799112noreply@blogger.com0
